To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JAMES J. CALLAHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Kent, in the county of Aroostook and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cushion Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in cushion devices to be applied to the head of a horse or other animals when they are sick and compelled to lie down.

When a horse becomes sick and so weak that he is compelled to lie down he has a tendency to continually raise his head and let it drop against the floor of the stable which results in so badly injuring the horse that he is compelled to be shot, and to overcome this, I provide a cushion or pillow which may be conveniently and readily secured to either side of the head of a horse.

Another object of this invention is to simplify devices of this character, rendering them comparatively cheap to manufacture, strong, durable, reliable in use and which will form a safety cushion for the horse.

With these and other objects in view this invention consists of a novelly constructed pad, means for applying the same to the head of a horse, and other objects will appear as the description continues and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings wherein like parts are indicated by like references, the numeral 1 indicates generally the cushion device to be applied to the head of a horse, which consists of a rectangular shaped member 2 being enlarged at its upper end and tapering at its lower end to conform to the shape of the side of the head of a horse. This rectangular shaped member has two upwardly eX- tending side members 3 and an end member 4. A suitable covering 5 is secured to the inner face of the member 2 and between the members 2 and the said covering is suitable felt packing 5 To hold the shape of the member 2 and protect the same from the wear, a T-shaped member 6 is provided, made preferably of metal having angularly bent portions 7 which support the side and end members. The angular portions of the T-shaped member 6 are provided with slots 8 and the slotted angular portions 7 which form suitable braces for the side members 3 are connected by an adjustable strap 9 which is to fit over the lower portion of the head of a horse and extends through loops 10 formed on the side members 3. A strap 11 connects the strap 10 with the angular portion 7 which supports the end member. Secured to each side of the enlarged portion of the member 2 are straps 12 which are connected to a strap 14 which is to fit around the neck of the horse, one of the straps indicated by 15 being greater in length than the other strap 12.

It is obvious from the foregoing description that this improved cushion device may be applied to either side of the head of a horse, the side portions of which are adapted to fit around the lower portion of the head of a horse and the end portion of which to fit in back of the ears of the horse and the body portion of which is of such length that will permit the horse to eat. It is to be understood that other minor details of construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to that come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A device of the character described comprising a T-shaped member having apertures in the ends of each of its arms, the ends of each said arms being bent upwardly to form angular extensions, a pad adapted to lie intermediate the ends of the arms, straps extending through the apertures of each of the arms, the straps in the oppositely extending arms being connected and the other strap being connected intermediate the arms of the aforesaid straps and means secured to the pad independently of the straps to assist in holding the device in place.
