JOI-IN BACHELDER, OF NORWICH, CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent No. 91,405, dated .Tune 15, 1869.
IIWPRO'VEMENT IN NECKTIES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN BACHELDER, of Norwich, in the county of New Londonrand State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in" the Manufacture and Fastening of Neckties; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the construction and manner of using the same, reference being, had to 'the accompanying drawings, making a prut of this specification.
My improvement consists of a new device for clamping and holding together the fabric used iu making a neckte, and a`holdingplate, forlsecuring the tie to the shirt-stud. y
Figure 1 is a rear view ofthe clamp, before it is closed, shaped to receive the covering, bows, holdingplate, 85o.
Figure 2 is an edge view of the same, showing the lines of curvature. i
Figure 3 is a rear view of the holding-plate, and
Figure 4, a transverse section of the same.
Figure 5 is a front view of a 'finished necktie.
Figure 6 is a longitudinal section of clamp, holdingplate, stud, covering, Ste., parted horizontally through the centre, as indicated by the red line x-x.
Figure 7 is a `transverse section ofthe same, drawn on an enlarged scale, and parted, as indicated by the red line lj-fg. This ligure is intended to show the relative position of all the parts and material, when the clamp is closed.
Figures 8, 9, and 10, represent a modification of my invention, viz, a plan view, a side elevation, and a sectional view, with holding-plate', respectively.
Like letters refer to like parts-in all the drawings.
a represents the clamp;
b, the holding-plate;
c, the bow d, the covering of the clamp; and
e, the stud.
It is immaterial whether the hook or loop is upon the holding-plate, and may be constructed with equal facility either Way.
To arrange the material and make a necktie, I first fold the fabric cl, to be used as a covering, over the clamp a, turning the edges inside.
An ornamental band, or fold may be arranged over this rst covering, if desired, the ends being folded over the curved ends of the clamp, as seen in figs. 5 and 6.
Next, I lay within the clamp the bow, folds, or whatever may be used as an ornament, to project from the side, and over this the holding-plate b. Then the curved ends of the clamp are folded down and firmly set, requil-ing no sewing.
In tigs. 6 and 7 the several parts are shown in the positions they occupy in ainished tie, c represent-ing the `clamp covered and closed, b, the holding-plate, held by the clamp, and c, the stud, having a hook turned upward, at the en`d of the shank, upon which the loop, or eye is placed, to support the tie.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the clamp a and supportingplate b, whereby the parts of the bow are secu'red together, the supporting-plate being provided with means for attachment to the shank, or head of a shirt-stud, substantially as described.
JOHN BAGHELDER.
