States,.res1d1ng at Rochester, in the county of Monroe vand State of New York, have invented certain neW and useful Improvements in VCigar-Moisteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enablefothersskilledin the art to which it appertains to make andy use the same.

'Ihis invention relates to improvements in moisteners for cigar boxes, and-has for an object the provision of means that may be readily inserted or removed from a cigar box, and one that willeectually keep in a properly moistened condition the cigars inV the box to which the same is Secured.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a moistener arranged with a recepracle for receiving .an absorbent material,

. presenting of a surface upon which adverf the-receptacle being'so arranged as to permit the ready evaporation of moisture from the absorbent material butwvill not permit any vcontact with the absorbent material.

A still further object of the invention is. the provision of a moistener that may bese-4 cured to the lid of a cigar box by.having a clamping member vpassing Aover the edge o'f the lid.-`

Another object o'f the invention is the con-4 struction o" a moistener simple indesign yet thoroughlyaccomplishing 'the purposes for which it isi constructed-by theprovision of means Vfor sustaining liquid in suspension and clamping the edge of the lid ofthe box to which itis applied* p Another object ofthe invention is the construction of'a hook shaped clamping springv that may extend foronly La short distance. over the'lid of thebox to which the moistenei" is secured, or the full width', of the box, the spring-accomplisliinga double purpose; namely, the clamping of thevreceptacle for holdingthe moisture in position, and the tisingmatter may be readily applied.

With these and other` objects inview the invention comprises certain `novel constructions, combinations and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter` more fully Adescribed .and claimed.

In the construction of my improved cigar moisteneithe same has been so formed'as to be readily applied or detached from the lid of a cigar box, and when appliednot to injure the cigars contained in the box. In forming'the moistene'r a piece of some light sheet .metal is taken and'formed int'o a comparatively atreceptacle into Which analosorbent material, as for instance, blotting paper, cork, sponge., or the .like is placed. The receptacleA is formed with edges that are bent over that act as Ways v'into which a back or supportlis slidingly fitted. VThe receptacle opposite the back that is slid into place is formed with a 4plurality'of apertures or with a forarninous surface in order to permit the moisture contained by the absorbent Vmaterial to keep the cigars in proper condition. i The sliding back is formed with -a -hook lshaped portion and is adapted 'to hook over the edgeotthe lid of the cigar :box and in order'to properly hold the same in place a spring vlis fitted over the hook shaped. part in the, back which positively so as to be free from any liquid not held'by the absorbent material. v

In order to more clearly disclose the invention I have shown one, embodiment in the accompanying drawings in Which-l indicates a cigar b 'iL-of any` desired kind, and 2'the lid to which is attached the moistenen Preferably in constructing `a moistener' the same is adaptedto occupy a considerableportion of the lid in order to properly distribute moisture to the cigars in the box.. The moistener is formed with a receptacle 3 that has provided in its tace a plurality ot' apertures et that torni in reality a toraminous'iace through which the moisture in the absorbent .material 5 may pass into the box for maintaining the cigars in proper jc'ondition when the lid is closed.` The receptacle 3 is termed with bent lver sides 6-6 into which is slida supporting back 7 that covers the entire back of the receptacle 3 and extends over the edge of the lid 2 When in. use. The part that extends over the edge of the. lid 2 is formed into hook 8, the hook 8 being of the same width as the main body part of the back that is slid into members 6 6. A spring clip 9 ris forced. over the hook shaped member S and normally holds thc same against lid i. when the moistener is in operation. Any desired. kind oit advertisingmatter may be placed'at point l0 onhoolr al and' clip 3 which is exposed to View when the lid 2 is closed.

Formed in ba lr '7 near the Iupper end thereof are a plurality oi' projections 1l and a plurality of projections 12. The projections 11 are adapted to have the upper end 13 of receptacle 3 moved upon the same. and by such i'novemeut is wedged against accidental movement- The proiections l2 are adapted to limit the downward movement oi the moistener when applying the saine to tbe lid of a cigar box for properly positioning the face ot the receptacle shaped member, 8 is formed with a tia red end le preferably in order to permit an casy application of the moistener to the box'.

Vllhen it is desired to apply i moistencr to a box oii'cigars the absorbent material 5, which may be blotting paper` sponge. cork or the like. is taken .and submei :jed in water or is iirst placed in the recept@ yle and thon submerged until saturated, after which the back 7 is placed in position and the hook Si is forced over the upper edge oi ythe lid 2. This will cause the. receptacle l to be mounted upon the lid 2 with its it'oraminous face downward when the lid is closed in innnediate prongmity to the cigars'in the box.`

Whenever the moisture in' the absorbent material is desired to be renewed all that will be necessary is to pull against. the hook shaped member 8 and the same may be easily slipped olithe lid of the box, together with the remaining part of the moistener. The absorlient. material may then be supplied with moisture and the moistener again placed in position. From this it will be observed that the moistencr may be applied and removed whenever desired either to the same box or on a new box without inarring the box and without injuring the moistener.-

The moistener has been described more particularly in relation to a cigar box, but it will be evident that the same may be used in connection iith other boxes or in other from the spirit of the invention. The construction and arrangement ot' means for holding n'ioisture and means for clamping the device in position permit thc application and removal of' the moistencr as often as desired.

l. ln a device o't' the character described, a receptacle, means for :arrying moisture mounted in said receptacle, a back for said receptacle formed with a. pressed out portion over which parts oi said receptacle are adapted to he t'orced for clamping the re- -cepi'acle to said back, a curved extension projecting from said back tor holding the baclr and receptacle in position, and clamp ing means substantially inclosing said extension for clamping the extension in position.

2. In a device of the character described, a receptacle, a. liquid carrying material positioued in said receptacle, a sliding back for said receptacle Atoi-ined with pressed out portions orcr which paris ot said receptacle are adapted to be i'orced lor clamping the receptacle to said bach, a hook shaped member nojeeling :troni said back, and spring means Vtor clamping said hook shai'ied member in position.
