Description

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
JAMES HOWARD, OF WEST MANCHESTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVED PAPER FOR ROOFING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 91,133, dated June 8, 1869.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES HOWARD, of West Manchester, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful article of manufactureto wit, Paper for Roofing; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.
The nature of my invention consists in making paper by any known process, but in long sheets or rolls, of any desired length, and then preparing and treating said paper in the manner hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and its application as a roofing material.
I make my roofing-paper of any known article suitable for making paper, and by any of the known means, taking care in every case to have the paper made suificiently thick and strong and in long sheets or rolls. I then thoroughly saturate the paper in melted asphaltum or like matter by passing the paper through it, taking care to have the asphaltum suffieiently hot that it will, by drawing the paper between scrapers as it comes out of the melted asphaltum, become dry enough to be rolled up without adhering or sticking together. By thus passing the paper through the melted and hot asphaltum and out between scrapers it can be put up in large rolls without delay or loss of time, thereby avoiding the necessity of hanging it up to drip and dry in small sheets, as practiced formerly.
After having the paper made and prepared as described, I then secure it down on the sheeting-boards of the roof I wish to cover, allowing the proper overlap. I then, With a suitable mop, coat the paper with melted asphaltum, and cover it with dry hot sand or fine gravel, or sand and gravel combined.
Now, I wish it clearly understood that the great advantage of my invention consists in saving time, labor, and expense in preparing the paper for roofing in the manner above described.
Having thus described the nature, construction, and operation of my improvement, what I claim as of my invention is The method hereinbefore described for preparing paper for roofing purposest0 wit, by passing the paper through liquid asphaltum heated to that degree which will cause the paper and the asphaltum on it to dry as fast as it is drawn from the reservoir of liquid asphaltum.
JAS. HOWARD.
