No. 909,248 v Specification 0!- Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 12, 1909.
Application filed July a, 1905. Serial name.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, ALroNss Swanson, a citizen of Switzerland, residing at Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore City and l State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Hand-Bag, of which the following is a s iecilication.
his invention relates to handbags and its object is to provide a device of this character capable of being folded or extended both in the direction of its width and in the direction of its length so as to either capacity without however marring the appearance of the ba Another object'is to provide a ba whici is cheap to manufacture, light and durable,
cess being readily had to the interior oi the bag when adjusted to any size.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts I which will be hereinafter more fully de scribed and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings is shown the preferred form of the invention.
In sald drawings: Figure 1 is a perspecits full one of its sides 0 sued for the purpose 0 extending the bag eterally.. Fig. 2 is a erspective'view of the be folded to its smal est size. Fi 3 is a vertical section through thebaga justed to an 9 intermediate size. n
Referring to the figures by characters of l reference, 1 desi nates a bellows-shaped bag l formed of suitalfie flexible material and the f sides of which consist of longitudinal fiexi- I ble 'stri s 2 secured to ether along their inner e gas and to' the rent and rear. ortions of the bag attheir other edges, t ere being snap or glove fasteners upon these ships as indicated at3 5945 to hold them together if desired and when it is not necessar to extend the bag toits full capacity. 5
:(handle strap 4 is secured to the front face of the bag and another similar strap is'secured to the-rear portion of the bag, theg 'e'rminals of these straps being heldto the 1 length and having bag by rivets 5 and also by snap or glove fasteners 6 which can be utilized for securing the bag in closed position. Secured to the ugper edge of the front of the ba or forms therewith is a flexible flap 7 mving the socket members 8 of snap or glove fasteners secured ranged upon the rear face of the bag at points approximately one-quarter the distance from the bottom to the top thereof are the bell members 9 of the fastener and similar ball members 10 are arranged u n the back face of the bag at points approximatelymidway between the ends of the bag.
lVhen the bag is extended to its fullest capacity all of the fasteners are disconnected unless it is desired to close the bag, whereupon the fasteners 6 are placed in engagement with each other. To reduce the capacity of the bag one-half the same is to ded transversely at its center and the flap 7 is drawn over the bottom end thereof so that thefasteners 8 can be placed in en: gagement with the ball members9. This arrangement of the parts has been shown in Fig. 3. To reduce the capacity to about one-third the be is folded transversely .twice, as indicated in Fig. 2, so as to bring the ball members 10 into position to be engaged by the socket members 8. When the bag is folded in this manner it has ractically the appearance of an ordinary arge hand iag. I
A bag such as herein described is particularly useful for shoppin purposes inas much as it can be COHVEHIGINY enlarged only to the extent necessary to hold the articles to be carried and when not in use can be folded into a very compact bag which can be emplo ed for the same purposes as an ordinary andbag.
It is of course to be understood that the bag can be suitably ornamented and the sizes and proportions of the parts can be varied to suit the taste of the user and without departing from the advantages of the invention.
What is claimed is:
A device of the class described compristherebo. Ar-
the spirit or sacrificinging abuF having its sides arranged inlonand cooperating means upon the flap and 10 gitudina folds, said folds being integral be? for holding the bag in folded position. .with the bag and maintaining the same1 n testimony that 1 claim the foregoing closed at the sides at'all times, means within as my own, I have hereunto aflixed my sign-- 5 the folds for detachabl holdin them toi ture in the presentre of two witnesses;
that a flap upon the ag, sai bag being ALFONSE STAEGER.
oldabie on lines extending'from side to Witnesses: side thereof to position the bottom portion WM. J. STEIN, of the bag between said bag and the flap, I I. J. HOFFMAN, Jr.
