To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, SELMAR REITZENBAUM, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Berlin, in the Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Bags, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent of Great Britain, No. 22,138, dated October 6, 1896,) of which the following is a specification.

My invention has relation to a hand-bag or satchel adapted to be converted by folding into varying sizes, and in such connection it relates particularly to the construction and arrangement of such a bag or satchel.

The principal object of my invention is to provide a bag or satchel of simple construction which may readily and quickly be converted or adjusted in size to meet requirements; and to attain this object my invention consists of a bag formed of leather, cloth, or other flexible material suitably secured to a hinged frame, the bottom of thebag in its extended position being provided with a stiffening bar or brace, the frame and the bag material having coacting fastening devices, of which those secured to the bag material are arranged in the side opposite to those on the frame and at varying distances from the top or frame of the bag, all arranged so that the material of the bag may when folded once or twice be secured to the frame to form successive smaller sizes of bag.

The nature and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in which- Figure 1 is a front elevational view, partly broken away, of a bag embodying the main features of my invention and illustrating the bag in its most extended condition. Fig. 2 is a rear elevational view of the bag, showing the same folded to substantially one-half the length shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a rear elevational view of the bag reduced to one-third the length of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective View illustrating in detail the construction and arrangement of the coacting fastening devices of the frame and bag material.

Referring to the drawings, or represents the bag material, which is of leather, cloth, or other flexible material, having at its upper end the hinged frame I) and at its lower end the distending-bar d. The bag is by preference provided with the side wings a a, which project beyond the sides of the frame and the ends of the bar 01, as indicated in Fig. 1, which wings are adapted to be inwardly folded, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, so as to form a bag the width of which corresponds to the length of frame I) and bar d.

In operation, if the bag is extended to its full length and width, as shown in Fig. 1, the wings a a are first folded inward, the bar 01 serving to facilitate the operation. If now, as shown in Fig. 2, the bottom rings 9 g are placed on the buttons or clasps e, the bag will be approximately half as long as it was originally. -If the size shown in Fig. 3 is desired, the bag is folded three times to bring the rings ff into engagement with the clasps or buttons e e. No matter what length the bag assumes its interior is not further decreased by infoldings of the bag, since the folded portions always rest on the outside of one side of the bag and are not crowded or placed in the interior of the bag.

Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

Ahand-bag, consisting of a hinged frame, a bag material secured thereto, a distending device in one part of said material, coacting fastening devices connected with said frame and material, of which those on said bag material are arranged on the side opposite to 5 2.
