KNIFE-HOLDING ATTACHIMENT FOB GRINDING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALBERT SOHWANTES A and CARL G. F. SCHUENKE, citizens of the United States, residing at Juneau, county of Dodge, and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Knife-Holding Attachments for Grinding- Machines, of which the following is a specificatlon.
Our invention relates to improvements in knife holding attachments for grinding machines and is equally adapted for holding elongated cutting devices such as the sickle bars of mowing machines or for holding short knives and other edged tools.
The object of our invention is to provide simple and inexpensive means which will permit of all the necessary adjustments for holding the blade at the roper angle or for supporting long or short lades.
n the following description reference is had to the accompanylng drawings in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of our invention showing the same applied to an ordinary grind stone. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the device for adjusting the rocker bar. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of .the arms for supporting a sickle bar.
Like parts are identified by the same reference characters throughout the several views.
A bed plate A is rigidly secured to the side bar B of the grind stone frame from which the grind stone C is supported.
D is a sliding base which is movably connected with the bed by bolts D and nuts d. These bolts D pass through a slot E in the bed and when the nuts are loosened, the base may be moved inwardly or outwardly to or from the grinding wheel C. The base is provided with an upwardly projecting member F having a ball f which is adapted to receive the clamping members G G, these clamping members being suitably socketed for the reception of the ball f. They are secured to the ball by means of the clamping bolts g, one of which is provided with an ordinary thumb nut g and the other (the one nearest the ball) is provided with a nut having a lever H whereby it may be operated with great force to bind the clamping members in position. There are a plurality of these bolts so that the arms are not only clamped by them, but connected and supported from each other solely thereby.
I ment, the nut means of the plate L which is providedwith a segmental slot M adapted to receive a bolt m which adjustably connects the bracket with an eye-member J. A nut N on this bolt is used to clamp the bracket L in an desired position of adjusteing loosened to permit a rocking movement of the bar K.
The sickle bar or blades to be ground are supported from the bar K, this being provided with adjustable clamping arms 0 which carry a clamping plate 1?, the latter being provided with longitudinal slots P through which clamping bolts 0 are passed, whereby the tool blade may be inserted between the plate P and the arms 0 and securely clamped by tightening the nuts Q on the bolts 0. These clamping arms 0 are preferably provided with lips R, whereby short blades or tools may be permitted to rest on these lips with their ends abutting the arms 0 and clam ed in this position by Where a sickle bar is clamped in position, the outer ends are supported by auxiliary arms S. These arms S may also be adjusted longitudinally along the bar K, the arms S and the arms 0 being provided with square openings through which the bar passes, and secured by set screws S in any desired position of adjustment along the bar.
With the above described construction, the holder may be adjusted to and from the grind stone b moving the base D along the slot E. The lade or tool may be swung into and out of contact with the grinding wheel by loosening the clamping members G G.- I
r The angle of contact may be primarily va ried by adjusting the bracket L and rocking the bar K to the desired position, while for diagonal angles the clamping members G G may be loosened and turned upon the ball f. Where short tools are to be supported, the arms 0 may be moved longitudinally of the plate P and made to engage the exterior ends of the blade or tool. It will thus be seen that our device is capable of any adjustment 1 which might be desired.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In a device of the described class, the combination with a suitable support, of a base slidingly mounted thereon, a fixed ball supported in a raised position from said base, clamping members comprising arms, having their lower portions substantially parallel and socketed at their extremities to receive the ball and a set of clamping bolts connecting said arms adapted to engage said ball, and blade supporting members connected with said clamping members.
2. In a device of the described class, the combination with a suitable support, of a base slidingly mounted thereon, a fixed pawl supported in a raised position from said base, clamping members comprising arms, having their lower portions substantially parallel and socketed at their extremities to receive the ball and a set of clamping bolts connecting said arms adapted to engage said ball, and blade supporting members connected with said clamping members, together with means for rocking said blade supporting member upon the clamping members and locking them in any desired position of adjustment.
3. In a device of the described class, the
combination with a suitable support, of a base slidingly mounted thereon, a fixed ball supported in a raised position from said base,
clamping members adapted to engage said ball, and blade supporting members connected with said clamping members, together with means for rocking said blade supporting members upon the clamping members and locking them in any desired position of adjustment, said blade supporting members including a supporting bar rotatably mounted in said clamping members, and a bracket having non-rotatable connections with said supporting bar and adjustable connection with the clamping members, whereby said bar may be rocked to any desired position of adjustment and secured in such position.
4. In a device of the described class, the combination with a suitable su port, of a rocking bar adjustably connecte therewith, clamping arms longitudinally adjustable on said bar, and a clamping plate operatively connected with said arms, said clamping plate being longitudinally slotted and adapted to permit an independent adjustment of the arms along the supporting bar.
