Description
(No Mode-L) G. S. BLACK.
SAW JOINTING DEVICE.- 7 N0. 315,228. Patented Apr. '7, 1885.
\ wwgmw I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE S. BLACK, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO E. C. ATKINS 87 CO., OF SAME PLACE.
SAW-JOINTING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,228, dated April 7, 1885.
Application filed January 26, 1885. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE S. BLACK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Jointers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved saw rounder or jointer adapted to be used in connection with the saw-guide described in my application of even date herewith.
The invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved saw-jointer for rounding circular saws. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same, showing the manner of securing it to a support. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the tubular body or sleeve, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a nut that is supported in the rear end of said tubular body or frame.
Like letters designate like parts.
The frame of the saw-jointer consists of a sleeve or tubular body, a, that is supported in a horizontal position. At the rear end of this sleeve (0 is arranged a pair of vertical lugs, 12 1), between which are received the grooved edges of a nut, c, in which is supported a threaded shaft, 6. By means of a hand-wheel, d, at its rear end, motion may be imparted to said threaded shaft 0, which carries at its opposite end a cylindrical block, of emery or other suitable grinding material. This cylindrical block 9 of emery is inclosed in the sleeve a, so as to be capable of protrusion at one end of said sleeve to variable distances under the rotation of the hand-wheel d and shaft 6, the cylinder 9 also rotating so as to constantly present new grinding-surfaces.
To the under side of the jointer-body or horizontal sleeve a is secured a Vertically-depending shank, h, which is adapted to enter a vertical opening in a saw-guide, as described in my application of even date for a patent on improvements in saw-guides. This shank h is screw-threaded, and is provided with a nut, 2', whereby it is secured to a sawguide or other suitable support, so as to be capable of turning to any desired angle.
It will be observed that as the hand-wheel d is rotated the emery-cylinder y will be adjusted slowly forward or back, as the case may be, owing to the slight pitch of the screwthreads on the shaft 6, the cylinder 9 also rotating so as to present a constantly-changing surface to the teeth of the saw, and thereby prevent unequal wear of the emery.
The circular saw to be jointed is mounted on an arbor that is arranged at a right angle I with the longitudinal axis of the cylindrical emery-block g, the forward end of which is adjusted in close contact with the edge of the saw. This adjustment is effected by turning the hand-wheel d, by which the shaft 0 and emery-block g are advanced or retracted slowly, owing to the slight pitch of the screwthreads on said shaft. The circular saw is now to be rotated rapidly in contact with the end of the emery-block, and during this operation the attendant will turn the handwheel d from side to side, thereby rotating the emery-block alternately in opposite directions, so as to present a constantly-changing surface for action on the saw-teeth. As the pitch of the screw-shaft e is so slight, this rotation of the emery-block does not materially affect its adjustment, which is, besides, at all times under the control of the operator.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1's
-1. In a saw-jointer, the combination of the tubular body a, having lugs b b and nut c, the threaded shaft 0, hand'wheel (Z, and emery-block g, substantially as described.
2. In a saw-jointer, the combination, with the tubular body or sleeve a, having a threaded shank, h, "provided with nut i, of an adjustable emery-bl0ck, 9, supported in said sleeve, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE S. BLACK.
