To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LOUISE H. PERCY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Washboard, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention is an improvement in washboards, having in view the provision of means for supporting the board over the tub in a substantially horizontal and slightly depressed position, whereby it will be unnecessary to bend the back in washing, to the extent required as when the board is disposed in the usual manner.

The invention. also resides in the board construction which is designed to prevent the splashing by the water on the operator, and provided with perforated pockets at the sides for retaining such articles as a scrubbing brush and soap.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters'of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view illustratin the preferred embodiment of my improved board as applied to a tub; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the same, substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a similar section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of the board, showing the corrugated portion made as a se arate part.

The boar proper is preferably constructed entirely of sheet metal, the same comprising a flat plate 5 having the usual length of transverse corrugations 6 either stamped from the body thereof or made as a separate part and afterward attached, and constructed at its head or forward end with an up wardly and outwardly-curved splash-plate 7. The length and position of the corrugations 6 are such as to leave a plain marginal portion 8 at one side, and a similar but somewhat wider portion 8 at the op osite side; this last-named plain portion 0 the board being divided into seats or pockets by extending certain of the corrugations thereacross and providing the outer edge with an upwardly-turned flange 9. These pockets have perforated bottoms for admitting of the passage of the water therethrough into the tub, and the bottoms of the corrugations are also provided with perforations 10, as

1, are off-set to carry them above the top of the board, which construction, when engaged with the top edge of the tub, supports the board over the tub slightly depressed therein, which prevents the water from the board running upon the floor. The board is further engaged with the top edge of the tub by hooks 13, rigidly fixed to its head end, which prevents any sliding or shifting of the board when in use.

The manner of using the board is as follows: The clothes to be washed are spread upon the corrugated portion of the board, and a brush 14, such as illustrated in Fig. 1, is used in scrubbing them; the water running off at the edges of the board and also through the perforations in the bottom thereof. During the use of the brush, the soap may be applied thereto without removing the cake from the soap pocket, which arrangement obviously at all times makes the soap and brush conveniently accessible.

The invention as shown and described while being the preferred manner of arrangement and construction of my improved wash-board is nevertheless susceptible of modifications falling within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A wash board having a corrugated ortion and provided with pockets at one si e of the corrugations, hooks adjustable transversely of theboard at opposite sides thereof, ada ted to support the board within a tub slightly depressed below its to edge and in an approximately horizonta position, leaving the rear end of the board free and unobstructed, whereby the clothes may be drawn thereover from the tub, and a splash plate connected to the board at its'opposite end.
