Be it known that l, MARY S. KJnLLs'rRoM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and'llmproved Washboard, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved washboard arranged to permit of rubbing the clothes over the corrugated surface in the usual manner and to allow of washing the clothes while in a tub by a rubbing and suction action.

In order to accomplish the desired result, use is made of a washboard provided with a rubbing member and a pounding and rocking member.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is the face view of the washboard, in position for rubbing clothes on the usual corrugated surface; Fig. 2 is a cross section of the same on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a face view of the washboard in position for washing clothes in a tub, the latter. being shown in section; Fig. 4 is an edge view of the same; and Fig. 5 is a perspectiveview of the pounding and rocking member detached from the washboard.

The frame of the washboard is formed of the usual side rails A, A connected with each other by a back B on which is held a corrugated rubbing member G on which the clothes are rubbed in the usual manner. The said rails A are extended at their lower ends to form legs A for supporting the washboard in the tub in the usual manner, and the back B is extended beyond the upper end of the rubbing member 0 to form a soap holder D. The outer edge of the soap holder D is preferably arched, and on it fits a corrugated pounding member E secured at its sides by nails, screws or other fastening devices F to the side rails A. The pounding member E extends beyond the front and back of the soap holder D and the top portion of the washing member is of a desired width and gradually tapers toward both sides with the ends approximately of the same width as the legs A to in order to insure a proper suction action of the pounding member E on the clothes and water, use is made of apertures E formed 1n the member E in staggered or alternate relation so that the water can readily circulate through the said openings during the time the washboard is moved up and down or rocked to and fro and pressed downward on the clothes in the tub G.

The member E is sufficiently flexible to readily fit onto the tops of washboards now in use, even if such tops are not arched as shown, it being understood that the member E after being stretched over the top of an ordinary washboard is secured to the side rails A by screws or nails F. In practice, the member E is preferably made of sheet zinc or tin but I do not limit myself to any particular material.

it isunderstood that the washboard with the member E in active position is very serviceable for washing blankets, curtains, tiannels and other articles, especially when the articles are in hot water, so that the user of the washboard does not need to take direct hold of the clothes with the hands for washing the same.

The washboard shown and described is very simple in construction, and can be cheaply manufactured.

Having thus described my invention, ll claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a frame, the upper edge of the frame being curved and corrugated, of a pounding and rocking member secured. to the corrugated edge of the frame projecting beyond the front and rear faces of the frame and tapering inwardly and downwardly to its ends and secured to the sides of the frame.
