HUGO VOGEL AND VICTOR VOGEL, OF S'I. LOUIS," MISSOURI, ASSIGNORS 'IYO HUGO VOGEL ANDFRANK JUS'IIN.
Letters Patent No. 90,613, dated May 25, 186g.
IMPRCVED PIANO-STOOL.
The Schedule referred to :in these Letters Patent and making. part of the same.
To all whomv it may concern Be it known that we, HUGO VOGEL and VICTOR VOGEL, both. of the city of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have made oertain new and useful Improvements in Piano-Stools; and We do hereby declare that the following-is a full and correct description thereof', reference being 'had to 'the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. v
The nature of this invention is in the arrangement and formation of a stool to form a seat for either one or two persons, as may he desired, and in the devices for supporting the seats, and operating the same in adjustment.
To enable those herein skilled to make and use our said invention, We will now fully describe the same, referring herein to the accompanying- Figure l, as a longitudinal sectional elevation; to
Figure 2, as a transverse sectional elevation; to
Figure 3, as a front view, with the double seat in proper position.
We support the seats, and the devices for movingl the same, upon the standard, A, which turns freely in the base, A1, this being supporte d upon three or more legs, A2, in any desirable ornamental manner.
At the top of the standard, A, We arrange the restfork B, having the arms b, upon which is the pivot c, for the angle-bars C.
Said angle-bars C connect the seats E and half seats D securely to each other; and, to more iirmly hold these parts :to their position, and especially to brace the seats E, `when raised, and supporting Weight, the half seats D and seats E are connected by braces F. By said means, the seats E vand half seats D are held in positions at right angles to each other during each position of use of either part.
The half seats D, when raised to a horizontal position, form a convenient scat for one person, and are used by such person, in performing upon a piano or `similar instrument, in the manner usual.
In order to retain the half seats D in the position thus desired, we have arranged a detent-hook, g, the outer end of which engages upon the staple e on the under side of each seat E; thus, the hook g being se-` cured in the rest B, the seat E is held to Aits vertical position, and secures the seat D in the horizontal position..
NVhen it is desired to drop the seats D, theoperator discngages the detent-hook g. This is done as follows:
Thesaid hook g has a lever, y', connected therewith, and operated by a rod, h, Which is moved by the pivoted lever t' from the knob-I. Thus, by turning the knob. VI in the proper. direction, the detent g is lifted out of enga-gement with the staple e, and the operator may then lift the seats E to a horizontal position, the seats D then dropping to a vertical position.
Herein the parts are again retainedby the hooks g, the rear ends whereof then engage with the staples t upon ,the under sides of the half seats I).
To disengage the parts, the operator uses the knob I, in a manner generally similar, but reversed to the motion formerly performed in releasing the seats E.
The devices and parts above described will have such ornamental form as may be tasteful and within econ` omy.
Having thus fully described our `invention,
1. The half seats D and seats E, when pivoted upon a rest-bracket, B, substantially in the manner hereinbefore specified.
2. The seat-locks g d and g e, rods h, lever i, and knob I, when combined with the seats D and E, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In Witness of said invention, We have hereunto set our hands, in the presence of HUGO VOGEL. f `VICTOR VOGEL.
Witnesses:
GEO. l. Hnnrnnn, J r., ROBERT BURNS.
