To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES T. AMMON, citizen of the United States, residing at Wooster, in the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam Heating Systems, of which the following is a specification.
This invention contemplates certain new and useful improvements in steam heating apparatus and the object of the invention is an improved device that is designed to be applied to the boiler and the return pipe of such an apparatus to prevent the water in the boiler from backing-up in the ,returning pipe which, as is well known, is a most objectionable feature in the ordinary heating systems of this characten lVith this and other objects in view that will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions and arrangements of parts that I shall hereinafter :fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is ,a perspective 'view of-my improved device showing it applied to a steam heating apparatus; and, Fig. 2 is a view in elevation thereof with parts in section.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawing, A designates .a boiler toavliich my.invention is applied,
' predetermined point and provided above the water with a steam space B. A main supply pipe C leads from the steam space B to vthe radiating` pipes (not shown), and a return pipe D communicates with the radiating pipes for the purpose of conducting the water condensed therein to the boiler, the, end of the pipe D being connected to the latter near the bottom thereof.
The return pipe D extends upwardly from of .the water in the boiler and forms a standpipe 1 to the upper end of which is secured.
a steam chest 2 that extends above the water level `as shown. The water in the boiler obviously fills the standfpipe and the lower portion of the steam chest, and steam is admitted to the upper portion of the chest by means of a steam pipe 3 connecting the chest with the steam space B of the boiler. The steam in the upper portion of the chest manifestly exerts its pressure on the water in the lower portion thereof to effectually prevent such water from backing up in the return pipe system, although said steam does not interfere with the returning of the con- -densed water to the boiler.
In order to prevent the steam admitted to the chest, from circulating through the return pipe, the latter is provided with a U-shaped trap' 4 the ends of which eirtend chest'Jand is thence conducted through the stand-pipe to the boiler.
In the preferred construction of the device a drain-cock 6 is secured to the lower portion or bend of the trap to provide means for drawin oft the water in case the latter should become polluted with sediment, and a vent-cock 7 is provided at the taller end of the trap to form an escape opening for the air forced through the pipes by the steam. when the latter is first admitted thereto.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
l. In a heating system, the combination with the boilerl and return pipe, of a standpipe connected to the boiler below the water,
level, a steam chest connected to the standsteam chest equal to the pressure upon the Water inthe boiler.
2. In a heating system, the combination with the boiler and return pipe, of a standpipe connected to the boiler below the Water level, a steam chest connected to the standf pipe and extending above and below the Water level in the boiler, the water in, said boiler illing the stand-pipe and partially filling the steam chest in alinement with the Water level inv the boiler, the return pipe being in continuous communication with the steam chest above the Water level therein7 a steam pipe leading` from the boiler to the upper portion of the steam chest and admitting steam to the latter so as to exert a continual pressure upon the Water in the steam chest equal to the pressure upon the Water in the boiler, and means for preventing the circulation of the steam admitted to the steam chest through the return pipe.
