SECTIONAL STEAM-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,850, dated July 19, 1887.

To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, VILLIAM LURKINs, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sectional Steam- Boilers, and I do hereby declare that the following isafull, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to sectional steamboilers; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, to be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l represents a vertical longitudinal section of a sectional steamboiler embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 a vertical transverse section of the same taken on line a: x, Fig. l.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents a hollow casting or head for a sectional steam-boiler, and the general construction and arrangement of this head with relation to the tubes of the boiler constitute my invention. At each end thereof the casting or head A is downwardly extended to form mud-pockets a, and its main portion is interiorly provided with a right-angular partition, b, that extends down to nearly the bottom thereof. By means ofthe partition b, I divide the casting or head A into two communicating chambers, c d, the former one of which has its upper portion, c', of double width. rIhe casting or head A is connected to a feed-water pipe, A', and the lower tubes, B, ofthe lirst tier, as well as the ones, C C', ofthe second tier, communicate with the chamber d in said casting or head A, in order that I may have the necessary circulation of the water, said tubes being joined by returnelbows D.
The generated steam rises above the waterline in the chamber d of the casting or head A, to find its way through the tubes C of the second tier and into the return-elbows E and tubes F of the third tier. The steam circulating in the upper tier of the boiler-tubes is superheated and finds its way through the tubes G into the enlarged portion c of the chamber c in the casting or head A, and from thence enters the conductor pipe or pipes II, leading to the radiators, and the water resulting from the condensation of this steam iinds its way back through the return pipe or pipes I to said casting or head.
By means of the casting or head I am enabled to first divide the steam from the water just above the line of the latter, and in case any of this water should be carried up and through the tubes F G and not evaporated by supcrheating it will fall back into the chamber c of said casting or head, leaving the steam in a dry state for circulation through the building in which the boiler may be located.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a sectional steam-boiler, a head divided into two communicating chambers, in combination with three tiers of tubes united by return -elbows, the lower tubes, B, in the first tier and all the tubes C C in the second tier communicating with the inermost chamber of the head, and the upper tubes, G, of the third tiercommunicating with the outer chamber ofsaid head, substantially as set forth.
2. In a sectional steam-boiler, a head divided into two communicating chambers and downwardlyextended at each end to form mud-pockets, in combination with three t-iers of tubes united by return-elbows, the lower tubes, B, in the first tier and all the tubes C C in the second tier communicating with the innermost chamber of the head, and the upper tubes, G, of the third tier communicating with the outer chamber of said head, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a sectional steam-boiler, the head A, having the communicating chambers c d, three tiers of tubes united by return-elbows D E, the tubes B in the first tier and the tubes C C in the second tier communicating with the chamber d, and the tubes G of the third tier communicating with the chamber c, in combination with the pipes IfI I, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
