Description

UNITED STA'lES PATENT OFFICE,
JOHN E. MUGOBKLE, OF HARPER, KANSAS.
WHIFFLETREE.
' ence being had to the accompanying draw- 1y invention relates to improvei'nents in whifllet-rees, and its object is to provide one which is simple and inexpensive in construc" tion and at the same time exceedingly strong and durable.
With the above and other objects in VIEW,
.the invention consists of the novel features of construction'and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in \VlllCl'l Fi ure 1 is a plan iew of my improved Whiil etree, one end of the same being in section; Fig. 2 is an edge view; and Figs. 3 and at are transverse sections taken on the planes indicated by the lines 3--3 and 4-l in Fig. 1.
-ln the drawings 1 denotes the body of my improved Whiiilotreo which is in the form of a wooden beam having a straight front edge and "a rear edge inclined forwardly from its center towards its ends so that it is thickest. at its center. ln said rear edge is formed a centrally disposed .longitiuliiuilly extruding groove or scat '2 of semi-circular shape in cross section to receive a metal stilleniug and strengthening rod -l which is of cylindriral form and has screw threaded ends 5 projecting beyond the ends of the body or vbeam l and through openings (1 formed in the long arms of right angular end plates 7. 'lhcso plates serve to strengthen and rriuforce the ends of the beam or body and have their long arms engaged with the ends of said body and thei short arms engaged with the front face of the same and formed with screw threaded openings 8. The latter are adapted. to receive fastening screws or bolts 9 which are passed through transverse openings 10 formed in the body 1, the heads ll of said screws being set in the body beneath the rear edge of the same so that the brace rod 4: passes over them and serves to retain them in position. Nuts 12 are arranged upon the projecting threaded ends 5 of the brace rod Specification of Letters Patent; plicetion filed May 21, 1908. Serial No. 34,127.

and when tightened serve to securely fasten said fed, the angle plates or irons 7 and the fastening screws..8, .to produce a whifileti'ee which is exceedingly strong and durable and at the same time inexpensive of production. The whiitletree may-be used as either a single tree or a doubletree upon vehicles, implements or machines of any description audit may be provided with clevis and draft connections of any'form and construction; I i
Having thus described my invention what I claim is? 1. A Whittletree comprising a body, angular end plates each having an arm engaged with one end of the 'body and an arm engaged with the frontface of'the same, trans verse fastenings passed through the body and into the forward arms of the angularrnd plates, a strengthening r'od arranged longitudinally on the rear edge of the body and serving to retain said fastenings in the body and means" for securing the ends of said rods to the outer arms of said angular end plates.
A whiflletree con'iprising a body formed at its ends with transverse openings and in its rear edge with a longitiulinal groove or seat, angular end plates, each haying an engaged with one end of the body and formed with an opening and another arm engaged with the front. edge of the bottom and 'tornicd with a screw threaded opening to rrgl'ister with one of the transverse open ings in the body, screws passed through said .l ransrcrse openings in the body and. engaged with the threaded openings in said end plates, the heads of said screws being disposed bonrath the bottoms of the grooves in the rear face of the body, a strengthening the rear face of the body and extending over the heads of said screws, the projecting ends of the rod being adapted to project through the openings in said angular plates and being screw threaded, and nuts upon the projecting threaded ends of the rod.
in testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
