IMPROVEMENT IN WHIFFLETREES. I

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,820, dated July 9, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSIAH B. SMALL, of Boston, in the county of Sufiolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Compound Two-Horse Whifiietrees; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan view of my adjustable compound two-horse whiftletree, and Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section of one of the adjustable ends of the whiffletree drawn to an enlarged scale.

To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it more in de tai The nature of my invention consists in an adjustable compound two-horse whiflietree, as

hereinafter described.

In the drawing, the part marked A represents the wood bar of the whiftletree, which is connected, by the pivot-bolt a, to the dragloop B. A short auxiliary metallic bar, 0, is also pivoted on the bolt to at the upper side of the wood bar A, as indicated. It is provided at its ends with trace-hooks D D, to which are secured the inner traces of the team. At the outer ends of the wood bar A are arranged metallic adjusting pieces E, on which are formed trace-hooks F, to which the outer traces justed by arranging the bolt or pin bin the different holes 11.

My two-horse whiffletree is designed especially to be used on plows, but it may be successfully used on other implements or on vehicles. It is simple in construction, and by its use a more even and steady draft can be obtained than with the ordinary evener-bar and two whiffletrees.

-It will be observed that in case the horses do not draw evenly an advantage can be given to either horse by simply extending one end of the whiffletree by means of the adjusting piece E. Another advantage is that when turning corners a much more even draft is obtainedas, for instance, in turning to the left the strain is naturally brought onto the righthand traces; this causes the right-hand end of the bar A to swing forward, and also the left-hand end of the bar 0, which action shortensthe left-hand trace and lengthens the righthand trace of each horse, and thus equalizes the draft in a very perfect and satisfactory manner. Then again, if it be desired to throw the plow to land when one horse is walking in the furrow, it can be easily eii'ected by simply moving out the adjustable pieces E, or vice versa. thumb-nuts, if preferred.

Having described my improved adjustable compound two-horse whiffletree, what I claim therein as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination, with the main bar A and auxiliary bar (J, of the adjustable end draft pieces E, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
