CARL W. ELSON, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
FQLDING BOX.
.pplication filed January 17, 1908.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 3, 1908.
Serial No. 4:11,26.
To all whom it may concern:
citizen of the United States of America, re-
siding at Grand Rapids, in' the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in folding boxes and its object is to so construct the same that the ends and sides will show no seams except at the corners; to provide a structure that will be substantial and rigid when formed up for use, with the fastening or locking means Wholly upon the inner side of the same; and to provide the device with various new and useful features hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1. is a perspective view of a device embodying my invention as it appears when arranged for use; Fig. 2. the same before it has been formed up for use and shown on a reduced scale; and, Fig. 8. a detail in vertical section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
, Like numbers refer to like parts in all of the figures.
The device consists of a flat sheet of .paste board or other suitable material, scored on thevarious lines shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2. to provide for folding at right angles on these lines. The rectangular portion 1 forms the bottom of the box, the lateral extensions 2 2 form the sides of the box, and
To secure the sides and ends to ea ch other, the ends 3 are provided with extensions of substantially the width of the ends 3 and adapted to fold inward and downward upon the inside of the box. These extensions have their outer corners beveled at about thirty degress and are divided bydiverging slots 8, thus forming a central dovetail part 4: having acute angles, and tapered tongues 5 hav- I' ing obtuse angles. The sides 2 are provided I with end extensions 6 severed from the ends 3 by parallel slots 9 and adapted to fold at right-angles to the sides 2 and extend along the inner surfaces of the ends 3 when the sides and ends are turned to vertical position. These extensions 6 are provided with openings 7 to receive the tongues 5 and also overlap the angles of the dovetail central part 4, thus locking the device in folded position. When formed up as shown in Fig. 1., the ends present a rigid rounded upper edge, the outside of the box being smooth and showing only a vertical seam at each corner, 7 strong and secure, and also wholly within the box where it is not exposed to accidental detachment, and is securely held in place by engagement with the contents of the box.
What I claim is:
1. A folding box comprising a rectangular central portion, sides and ends integral therewith, extensions on the ends each extension. having tapered tongues with obtuse angles and a dovetail central portion having acute angles, and end extensions on the sides having openings to receive the tongues and overlapping the angular portion of the dovetail. middle portions when the device is assembled for use.
2. A blank adapted to forth a folding box comprising a rectangular iiddle portion, side and end portions integral therewith and adapted to fold at right angles thereto, an extension on each end at the side opposite the middle portion and adapted to fold upon the inner surface of the end, said extensions having beveled corners and diverging slots forming each extension into two outer tapered tongues having obtuse angles and a mitlldle dovetail portion having acute angles, enc
extensions on the sides and separated from the ends by parallel slots and also pro vided with openings to receive the tongues and adapted to overlap and hold the dovetail portion when the device is arranged for use.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CARL W. ELSON.
