FOLDING BOX.
SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 736,727, dated August 18, 1903. Application filed October 22, 1902. Serial No. 128,271. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MORRIS HIRsoH, a citi zen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State ofNew York, have invented a new and Improved Folding Box, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements infoldable boxes; and the object that I have in view is the provision of a box with a rein-' forced bottom, said box being more particularly intended to serve as the lower or bottom part of the complete box or package.
The described box is bent from a on e-piece blank of peculiar form, which not only secures a desirable interlocking of the side and end- Further objects and advantages of the in-.
vention will appear in the course of the subjoined description, and the novelty will be defined by the annexed claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is a plan View of a blank adapted to be bent in a way to form a reinforced box. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the blank shown by Fig. 1 partially bent into a condition to form the lower section of a box.
In the form of blank A shown by Fig. 1 it is cut to the desired form, slitted, and scored or creased all at one-operation of a suitable die or other machine. This blank consists of the middle section 5, the sides 6 7, each having a tongue 8, the ends 9 10, each having a flap 11, and the side flaps 12 13. The sides 6 7 of the blank are creased or scored at the side edges of the middle section 5 on the lines indicated ate a. The ends 9 10 correspond in width to the middle section 5, and the blank is scored or creased between its middle section and the ends at the lines I) b.
Each end flap 11 is adapted to be folded on a line indicated at c, and each tongue 8 is foldable with relation to the side 6 or 7 on the crease-line d. The side flaps 12 13 are foldable on the score-lines e e, Which-define the flaps 12 13 with respect to the sides 6 7. The flap 12 is provided in its side edge with a series of notches 14, forming a series of lips 15, the latter being foldable on thecre'ase-line f. The other side flap 13 is made in one piece with an extended bottom flap 16, and this flap is provided with a series of shallow notches 17, which correspond in number to the lips 15 and form a series of projections 18, the latter corresponding to the notches 14C in the flap l2. -Fromthe foregoing description it will be seen thatthe blank A is scored on the lines a a, b b, c, (1, e e, and f; but this blank is also slitted or cut at g on lines. between the ends 9 10 and the tongues 8 of the sides 6 7. To form the box from the blank shown in Fig. 1, the side flap 12 is first folded on the line e in order to bring said fiap 12 into overlapping relation to the side 7, while the lips 15 extend part way across the middle section 5 and are adapted to fold on the crease-line f. The side flap 13 and the bottom flap 16 are now folded on the crease-line e to make the said side flap 13 and bottom flap 16 lie upon the side 6 and the middle section 5, respectively, the projections 18 of said flap 16 fitting in the notches 14 of the fiap '12, while the lips 15 enter the notches 17 of the bottom flap 16, thereby interlocking the contiguous edges of the side flap 12 and the botton flap 16,as clearly shown by Fig. 2. The sides 6 7 are now turned at right angles to the bottom section 5 on the crease-lines ofct, and the flaps 12 13 fold with these sides in order to lie perpendicular to the middle section 5 and the bottom flap 16, as also shown by Fig. 2. The folding of the sides 6 7 brings the tongues 8 into positions perpendicular to the middle section 5, and these tongues 8 are folded inwardly, so that they meet at'the ends of the space or chamber, the'loweredges of said tongues engaging with the end edges of the bottom flap 16. To complete the box, it is only necessary to fold the ends 9 10 on the lines I) 1) against the inwardly-folded tongues 8, and finally the end flaps 11 are folded on the lines a, so as to inclose the upper edges of the ends 9 10 and to extend into the space or chamber of the box member.
It will be seen that the box-blank has the end flaps 11 fitting against the end edges of the folded side flaps 12 13 in order to lock the ends 9 10 and their flaps 11 against accidental separation. It will be understood that the end flaps 11 fold over the inwardly-folded tongues 8 and that the side edges of these flaps 11 engage with the end edges of the folded side flaps 12 13, because these end flaps 11 areequal to the width of the box member, and the blank is so cut or stamped as to leave narrow spaces between the end portions of the side flaps 12 13 and the ends of the box, into which spaces are received the end edges of the end flaps 11.
The box herein described and shown by Figs. 1 and 2 is made from a one-piece blank, which is peculiarly constructed to form a double bottom and which has its several parts arranged to secure interlocking of the bottom with one side flap and an interlocking engagement between the end flaps, which fold over the ends and the tongues with the end edges of the side flaps.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A box-blank having a middle portion, folds at the sides and ends thereof, a notched member on one side fold, and another member forming a part of the opposite side fold, said last-named member being arranged to extend across the middle portion and to have interlocking engagement with the notched member in the folded condition of the box.
2. A box-blank substantially such as herein shown and described, comprisinga middle section, ends provided with end flaps, sides having foldable tongues separated from the ends by intermediate incisions or slits, a side flap foldable upon one side and having a series of notches and a series of lips, and a bottom flap foldable upon the other side and provided with a series of notches and a series of projections, the latter adapted to have interlocking engagement with the notches and lips of the other side flap.
3. A box-blank substantially such as described, having a middle member, sides, ends provided with flaps, foldable tongues, a side flap having lips, and another side flap pro vided with a bottom flap having notches to engage the lips on the described side flap.
4. A box having a middle portion sides and ends, side flaps foldable upon the sides, one of said side flaps having a series of notches separated by intervening lips which are foldable upon the middle section, and a bottom flap foldable across themiddle section and provided with notches and projections which interlockwith the corresponding parts on the opposite folded side flap.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MORRIS HIRSCH.
