Letters Patent No. 90,235, dated May 18, 1869.

IMPRovED Toorn-BRUSH.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same,

To all whom 'it ma/y concern Be it known that I, EDMUND F. BURROWS, of Mystic River, in the county of New London, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tooth-Brushes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specincation, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View, with part of the case in section.

Figure 2 is a perspective view, with the brush attached to the case.

Figure 3 is a longitudinal section.

The same letters in all the figures are used to designate the same parts.

My improvement'consists in constructing a toothbrush, with the handle so formed, that the brush may be attached to a cylindrical case, which forms the handle, or be reversed and enclosed within the case, so that it may be carried in the pocket, or otherwise,couven iently, and without being exposed to be soiled.

In the annexed drawing- A. is an ordinary tooth-brush, attached to a short stein, A', projecting from the part B, which has chased, on each end, the thread of a male screw, a.

Said threads are cut in opposite directions, so that the brush may be screwed on to the socket, so as to project therefrom, as shown in fig. 2, or screwed into the same, as shown in gs. 1 and 3.

The point B is flattened, so as to be readily seized by the thumb and fore-finger, to screw it into, or unscrew it from the socket.

C is the socket, or case, which forms the handle of' the brush, when the latter is attached for use, as shown iu lfig. 2, or serves as a case for the same, as shown in figs. and 3.

The bottom of the socket isclosed, and the top is open, having thethread of a female screw chased upon its inner surface, to receive either of the threads chased on the part B. v

When the brush is screwed into the socket, it is protected by the latter, so that it may be carried in the pocket, or otherwise, without being exposed to dirt. l r

IVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

As an article of manufacture, a tooth-brush, composed of the parts'A, B, and O, the part B having the screwsa and b nt upon it, and all constructed and arranged, in relation to one another, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
