UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JrEORGE B. HUSSEY, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
ADJUSTABLE HAN DLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 558,074, dated April 14, 1896.
Serial No. 548,385. (No model.)
T at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. HUSSEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Handles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in adjustable handles, and has special reference to an adjustable handle adapted for use upon a brush.
The object of my invention is the provision of a simple, durable, and inexpensive adjustable connection between the brush and the handle or staff by means of which the brush can be adjusted to any desired position and retained, thereby adapting the brush for use in brushing the floor, wall, or ceiling or for use as a window-cleaner or for any purpose where such an article could be employed.
The invention consists of an adjusting device between the brush and handle embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts, as will be disclosed herein.
The figure represents a side elevation of a brush having attached to the back thereof my improved handle, said handle being partly broken away to more clearly show the, details of construction.
Referring by letters to the drawing, A designates the frame or back of the brush, and
B designates the bristles thereof, and I would say that the brush may be of any desired construction, as it in itself does not constitute my invention.
The back of the brush is provided with a central opening to receive the stem 0 of the ball D, which fits in the socket E, carried by the sleeve or ferrule F, which receives the lower end of the handle or staff G, and on one side of the ferrule F is formed the lug I-I, adapted when the brush is supported in a vertical position to enter an opening J, formed in the back of the brush.
The ferrule F is composed of the parts L, having at their upper ends the exterior threads L, which are engaged by the threads on the collar L which serves to hold the parts L in frictional contact with the ball at all times and in any adjustment, and the parts L are further provided on their abutting faces with a lug-and-socket connection L It is evident that I provide an adjusting device which is the embodiment of simplicity, durability, and inexpensiveness, that it will permit the brush to be adapted for use for many purposes, and is entirely practical and useful.
I claim In an adjustable handle, the combination of the brush back or frame having a socket or sockets, a stem carrying a ball and secured to the back, the flat plates having their ends cupped to fit on the ball and having lugs and sockets on their abutting faces to hold the plates from slipping and said plates also having their outer faces threaded, a threaded ferrule fitting upon said plates and acting to clamp the cupped ends of the plates on the back, a handle connected to the ferrule and a lug on the ferrule for engaging one of the sockets to hold the brush in a vertical position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. GEORGE E. HUSSEY. YVitnesses:
ALBERT D. BEAN,
CHARLES MAYO.
