To all 'whom 'lt 'may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY MITCHELL, of Osborne, Greene county, State of Ohio, have invented an Improved Fruit-02th, and I do hereby declare the following to be an exact description thereof, reference being had to 'the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of' this specification, in which A Figure 1 represents a top viewof the fruit-can.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction of, in combination with the groove at the top 'of the fruit-can, (forming a ledge for 'the edge of the lid to rest upon, and also for the crooked ends of a Wire on the outside, to secure the lid,) of a lid, the edge' of which is turned up as a flange, and closely fits on the ledge of the can, and having a broad bearing-surface, inclining inward and downward, so that the atmospheric'pressure will tend to close the lid tight, and by the addition of a small quantity of melted or soft Wax, the can is sealed perfectly air-tight, while the Wire across the top holds the lid permanently to its place; and when the can is to be emptied of its contents, the Wire is withdrawn, sideways, and thelid is easily lifted ofi" with a knife, and thus the cali is easily filled and cleaned out, by the whole top being removed, and can be used for years`,*as the njost durable and cheapest of frnit-cans. i i I A represents the can, that can be made of Britannia-Ware, tin, or any suitable metal, or porcelain, having a groove, B, at the, top, with a straight edge, O. The top side of the groove B forming a ledge on the inside of the can, for the raisedrim or edge D of the lid E to rest upon, and make a close joint. The centre of the lid 'E is dished, so as to oompress the air from the centre to the edge, and force it out around the edge of the lid as the lid is being pressed down to its place.

The cross-Wire G, with its turned ends H H, fitting on the outside of the groove B, is then drawn to the centre, which tightens the lid E, and holds it permanently to its place.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv v The combination of the groove B, at the top of the fruit-can, with the fianged lid E, resting upon the groove B, in the full size of the can, with a Wire'lever, G, to hold the lid firmly to its place, substantially as (lescribed, and for the purposes set forth. i
