Description
N. PETERS. PHOTULITNOGRPHER. WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED-STATES PATENT Ormea.
D. w. wrt/IAN, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN LOCOMOTIVE-ENGINE FURNACES.
Specification forming part ot' Letters Patent No. 59,261, dated April 20, 1869.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, D. W. VYMAN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ash- Pans for Locomotive-Engines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure l represents a plan of an ash-pan constructed in accordance with my improvement; Fig. 2, a side or edge view of the same; and Figs. 3 and 4, central verticalv sections thereof, taken at right angles to each other.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists, rst, iu a novel arrangement of side-draft flues or passages and dampers, or valves thereto, in combination with a deiiecting flange or flanges arranged to project internally from the sides of the pan at its top or upper portion, whereby not only is the air admitted through the sides of the pan above the basin or bottom portion thereof, but the dampers or valves and air iiues or passages controlled by them are secured from being clogged or choked by snow on the track, and the incoming air heated in its way to the lire by its contact with and radiation from the deflecting flange or flangeswhich are exposed on its or their upper surface or surfaces to the action of the re in the fire-box; secondly, the invention includes a novel combination and arrangement of levers, cranks, and link-rods for operating the several dampers or valveswhich control the air fines or passages in the sides of the ash-pan.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A2 is an ash-pan of rectangular form, the upper portion of the sides of which is provided with air lues or passages a2 a2, that are controlled by dampers or valves b2 b2, which are here shown as being of a hinged character or action, and arranged so as to open inward, there being a valve or damper and air tlue or passage to each of the four sides of the pan. B2 B2 is a curved or downwardly-sloping flange, arranged to project internally from the upper portion of thepan above, and so as to face the ues a2 a2, with a sufficient space between said flange and the sides of the pan, around each of which such iiange is extended to ad mit of the play of the valves b2 b2 beneath it,
f upper portion of said pan at its sides, but said plate or lian ge, being exposed on its upper surface to the action of the re, serves to heat the incoming air, which promotes combustion.
By the arrangement of two of the air-lues a2 a2 and dampers b2 b2 in the upper portion of the pan at its sides, the same are secured from being clogged or interfered with by snow on the track, while the deilecting-iiangeB'z B2 serves to give all the advantage as regards feed of the air to the lire of a lower admission.
The swinging dampers or valves vb2 b2 on the several sides ofthe pan are operated simultaneously by means of T-shaped levers D2 D2, working on fulcrum-pins c2 c2, arranged on two of the adjacent sides of the pan, said levers being suitably connected by a lifting-rod to work them in unison. Pivoted to the shorter arms of these levers are link-rods d2 d2, that connect at their' opposite ends with cranks or arms e2 e2, fast to the fulcrum-shafts f2 f2 of the dampers b2 b2, which combination secures the joint action ot' the opposite dampers, and, by uniting the two levers D2 D2 to operate in unison, of the seve 1al dampers on or to all the sides of the pan. l
The T-shaped levers D2 D2 on the two adjacent sides of the pan should'be so arranged as that their longer arms, if extended, would intersect each other, whereby they may be readily connected to work in unison, and by one and the same rod.
The lower or what may be termed basin7 portion of the pan is of a corrugated character, being for the most part made up of double inclined hollow ribs E2 E2, arranged to extend across the bottoni of the pan diagonally, or from corner to corner, thus giving a solid center to the pan and materially strengthening it, while the sloping sides of said ribs or corrugations serve to direct the ashes or cinders to discharge-openings g2 g2 made in the bottom of the pan, said openings being closed, when it is not required to dump or discharge, by a plate or disk, F2, turning on a center, as at h2,
and operated by a handle, i2, which disk has openings g4 g4 in it for, by suitably turning it7 establishing communication with the openings g2 g2 to'effect discharge of the ashes or oinders.
What is here claimed, and desired to be seeured by Letters Patent, is-
l. The arrangement of the side lues, a2 a2, and dainpers N112; controlling the same, in combination with the interior upper deecting ange 0r ianges B2 B2, arranged relatively to said iiues and lower or base portion of the pan, substantially as specified.
2. The arrangement of the T-shaped levers D2 D27 link-rods d2 d2, and cranks e2 e2 on adjacent sides of the pan, for operating the several Valves or dampers b2 b2, substantially as shown and described.
D. W. VYMAN.
