Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 30, 1908.
Application filed April 20, 1907. Serial No. 369,414.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK M. Bo'r'rs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Inalls, in the county of Payne and State of klahoma, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to farm gates, and more particularly to automatic gates, the object being to provide very novel and efficient means for opening and closing the gate from either side so that the gate can be readily operated from a vehicle without alighting, from the same.
Another object of my invention is to provide the gate with a pair of latches so that it will be im ossible for an animal to open the gate by ru bing against the same.
Another object of my invention is to provide very simple means for operating the latchesso that they will be thrown out of engagement with the catches before the gate starts to swing.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a perspective view Fig. 2 is a top plan view showing the gate swung partly open in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of a ortion of the gate in an o ened position. ig. 4 is a vertical sectiona view through a portion of the gate showing the latches secured over the catches of the post.
In the drawings A and B indicate a pair of posts arranged on the opposite sides of the road, to whlch the ends of the fence are secured, and O the gate adapted to close the opening between the same. The post A is provided with pintles X on which are mounted the apertured projecting ends of the top and bottom bars of a rectangular gate-frame C which are connected together by vertical bars 0 O and a diagonal brace 0*, over which is secured the ordinary wire netting.
Brackets D and E are secured to the inside of the endof the gate-frame in alinement with slots formed therein, on which are pivotally mounted latches D, E which extend through the slots and fit over oppositely arranged catches F, secured in the longitudinal recess formed in the side of the gate-post B,
i and are securely held in position by a coiled spring F connecting the latch E to the bottom bar of the gate, so that the gate will be locked against any vertical movement. The latches are connected together by a link G which is ivoted to the end of the latch E and to the latch D adjacent its pivoted point, so that both latches will be operated together.
A longitudinal bar 0' is secured between the bars C C of the gate-frame, in which is mounted the lower end of the crank-shaft I-I cured in the top bar of the gate and is rovided with an enlarged a ertured em on which is secured a socket for the purpose hereinafter fully described.
Secured on the shaft H by a thumb-screw J is a sleeve J provided with apertured crankarms J 2 J 3 extending outwardly at right angles therefrom. The end of a coiled spring K is secured in the arm J the other end of which is secured over an eye secured in the bar C of the gate, so as to draw the shaft back into position after it has been operated. Mounted on the crank-arm J is a link L in the end of which is secured a rod M which extends through a bore formed in the bar C and is pivotally connected to the upwardly projectmg arm D of the latch D, so that when the shaft is operated, the latches will be swung out of engagement with the catches on the fence-post and allow the gate to swing open.
The post A is of a greater height than the post B, and has a bracket N secured to its face adjacent its u per end, in which is mounted a lever O w ich is rovided with a slot 0 adjacent one end an a cable O provided with a handle at its other end. A post P is arranged alongside of the road a suitable distance away from the post A, and is provided with a bracket P in which is mounted a lever Q having a cable Q connected to one in its other end in which is mounted a link R which extends through the slot of the lever O and connects the levers together, so that their upward movement will be limited.
Secured in the lever O is an eye-bolt S in which is secured the eye T of a socket T which is secured over the end of the link U which is provided with a bifurcated end U, in which is pivotally mounted the stem V of a ball V which is mounted in the socket I carried by the shaft I-I forming a universal joint, so that the link can move in any direction desired.
which extends up through a bearing II seend provided with a handle and a slot formed The operation is as follows: When it is desired to open the gate from either side, the lever on that side is pulled down which oscillates the shaft H and draws the latches out of engagement with the catches on the post and as the lever is pulled further down the gate is swung open about half-way. The lever is then released and the momentum of the gate carries the same all the way open, bringing the shaft H on the opposite side of the lever so that when the lever on the opposite side of the gate is pulled down after passing through the gate, the gate will be swung half-way closed. The lever is released and the momentum of the gate carries it the rest of the Way closed and as the latches strike the beveled ends of the catches, they will ride over the same and be securely locked.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a gate provided with pivoted latches connected together, of a rocker-crank shaft mounted in said gate, a sleeve secured on said shaft provided with crank-arms, a rod connecting one of said,
arms to one of said latches, and a lever carrymg a link having a universal connectlon with said crank-shaft.
2. The combination with a gate provided with pivoted spring actuated latches connected together, of a vertical rocker-crank shaft mounted in said gate, a sleeve adjustably mounted on said shaft, provided with right angled crank-arms, a coiled spring connected to one of said arms, an operating rod connecting the other arm to one of the latches, and a lever carrying a link having a universal connection with said crank-shaft.
3. The combination with a pair of gateposts, of oppositely arranged catches secured to one of said posts, a gate hinged to the other post, pivoted spring actuated latches mounted in said gate adapted to fit in said catches, a rocker-crank shaft mounted in said-gate, a sleeve'secured on said shaft provided with crankarms, a coiled spring con necting one of said arms to the frame of the gate, a lever mounted on the post to which the gate is hinged, a link carried by said lever, havlng universal connections with said crankshaft, and means connected to the other crank-arm of the sleeve for operating the said latches for the purpose described FRANK M.
