GATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 12, 1906.
Application filed February 23, 1906. Serial No. 302,653.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AARON E. OULLEM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pleasant Plains, in the county of Independence and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Gate, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gates of the class arranged to be opened and closed from a vehicle or horseback and without alighting, and has for its object to improve the construction and increase the efficiency of devices of this character.
With these and other objects in view, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, is illustrated the preferred form of the embodiment of the invention capable of carrying. the same into practical operation.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the gate complete with the latch-post partly in section. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of the latch-post enlarged.
The improved device may be applied to any gate arranged to swing from one end, and for the purpose of illustration a conventional structure is shown at 10, hinged at 11 to a post 12 and swinging adjacent to a latchpost 13. The gate is provided with alatch 14, actuated by a spring 38 and adapted to engage a keeper 15 on the post 13 when the gate is closed, and spaced from the post 12 are stop-posts 16 17, against which the gate bears when open. Attached to the gate 10 is an arm 20, disposed at an angle to the gate and extending at one end beyond the hinges The outer end of the arm 20 is forked, and pivoted at 22 in. the forked portion is'a bar 35, bent laterally, as at 41, and with terminals of the bent portions converging and bolted or otherwise secured to an arm 23. Eyes 42 43 are connected to the bar 35 at its lateral bends, and coupled to these eyes are flexible elements, such as chains 24 25. The chains areunited at one end to one end of a rod 26, and the rod is in turn united at its lower end at 27 to the latch 14.
Pivoted to the posts 16 17 at 28 29 are levers 3O 31, the levers connected by cables 32 33 to the outer end of the arm 23 and provided with weights 34 35 at the lower ends to maintain the levers yieldably in position. The cables 32 33 extend through the levers 3O 31 and hang therefrom and are provided with terminal handles 36 37 to provide means for operating the levers. The cables 32 33 are provided with stops at 44 45, where they pass through the levers 3O 31 to prevent the movement of the cables therethrough.
With a device thus arranged when the driver or rider approaches the gate he pulls down upon the nearest pull- handle 36 or 37, as the case may be, which action moves the lever 23 laterally a short distance and withdraws the latch member 14, and the continued pull upon the rod swings the gate open, the momentum carrying the gate into open position against the stop-post 16 or 17. As the operator passes through he pulls down upon the other pull- handle 36 or 37 as the case may be, and thus reverses the action and causes the closing of the gate.
The device is simple in construction and can be inexpensively manufactured and applied to any of the various constructions of swinging gates manufactured.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is- 1. In a gate, posts spaced apart and disposed at opposite sides of a gateway-opening, a gate swinging from one of said posts, a keeper on the other of said posts, a latch movably connected to said gate and detachably engaging said keeper, a supporting-arm connected to said gate and projecting beyond the hinge member of the gate, a bar pivoted centrally thereof to the projected end of said arm and extending laterally and converging in advance of the bar and united rigidly to a trip-arm, eyes disposed at the bends of said bar, flexible elements connected to said eyes, connecting means between said flexible elements and said latch, and means operative by the person approaching the gate for actuating said trip-arm and releasing the latch and swinging the gate.
2. In a gate, a hinged post and a latch-post spaced apart and disposed at opposite sides of a gateway-opening, a gate swinging from said hinge-post, a latch movably connected to said gate and detachably engaging said latch-post, a supporting-arm connected to said gate and projecting be 0nd the hingepost, a trip-arm pivoted to t e projected end of said supporting-arm and extended laterally at the pivoted end, a rod connected at one end to said latch, flexible members between the other end of said rod and the later between the other ends of said levers and the free end of said trip-arm, and pull-handles carried by said levers.
3. In a gate, posts spaced apart and disposed at opposite sides of a gateway-opening, a gate swinging from one of said posts, a keeper on the other of said posts, a supporting-arm connected to said gate and extending beyond the hinge-post, a latch spring supported upon said gate and extended for engagement With said keeper, a trip arm pivoted to the projected end of said supporting-arm and extending laterally at the pivoted end, a rod connected at one end to said latch, flexible members between the oth er end of said rod and the extended portion of said trip-arm, and means operative by a person approaching and leaving the gate for actuating said trip-arm.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
