GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part ofy Letters Patent No. 552,690, dated January 7, 1896.
Application filed July 24, 1895.
To ai?, whom t Hwy concern:
Beit known that I, OLLE LARSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Raymond, in the county of Racine and State of lvisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description thereof.
My invention relates to that class of gates that may be operated at a distance therefrom; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In lthe drawings, Figure l presents a perspective view illustrating my improvements,
and Fig. 2 a detail horizontal section showing certain of the parts as they would appear invert-ed.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents the inner stile of the gate, and this stile extends somewhat above the remainder of said gate. By means of any suitable hinges the gate-stile A is connected to a main post B, and the upwardly-extended portion of said stile is rounded to form a bearing for a flanged or grooved pulley-segment C, the latter being held in place between stile-shoulders by means of a metallic strap I), that also conforms to the rounded portion of the aforesaid stile, in order that said pulley-segment may have rotary movement, for the purpose hereinafter specified.
Connected to the under side 4of the pulleysegment, on opposite sides of the gate-line, are wires E, and both of these Wires are joined to a link F pivoted on the gate. Another wire G connects Vthe gate and link, the latter -wire being normally slack and having the function of limiting swing on the part of the link F when there is draft on either of the wires E that are joined to the pulley-segment C, above specified.
Alpivotal hanger II on the gate is connected to the link F by means of a wire I, and the' gate-latch J is pivoted to the hanger, the latter being also in connection with a spiral spring K joined to a vertical strip L fast at its ends to bars of the gate.
Fast on the pulley-segment C are ends of cables M that cross each other and extend in opposite directions, the other end of each ca- Serial No. 557,018i (No model.)
ble being connected by a wire N with the lower extremity of a vertically-disposed bar P pivoted midway of its length to a post Q at some distance from the gate. A single wire R connects the upper extremities of the bars P, and a pull rod or wire S is joined to a shank T that extends at a right angle from each of said'bars, the latter and their shanks being levers for operating the gate.
On the line intermediate of the main post B and each lever-post Q, I arrange a latchpost U, and each pull rod or wire S is at a suflicient distance from the gateway to require lthat an ordinary vehicle shall clear the opened gate before the occupant of said vehicle can operate a closing-lever. The gate being closed, a pull on either lever will cause rotary movement of the pulley segment, thereby withdrawing the latch J from its keeper, and further rotation of said segment being checked by the wire Gr becoming taut said gate is caused to swing open on its hinges. The gate being opened and the lever released, the spring K contracts and the latch J automatically engages another keeper on the adjacent post U along the approach to said gate. i
keeper on post U, and at the same time swing said gate to its closed position.
Having thus described my invention, what l I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. v The combination of a hinged gate having a spring-controlled sliding latch, a pivotal link connected to the latch-mechanism, a flexible check arranged to limit movement of the link, a pulley-segment loose on the hinge-stile of the gate, wires connecting said link and pulley-segment on opposite sides of the gate line, and suitable means for imparting rotary movement to the aforesaid pulleysegment at a distance therefrom in opposite directions.
2. The combination of a hinged gate having a pivotal hanger in like connection with its latch, a spring connecting the hanger and a stationary portion of the gate, a link pivoted on said gate, a wire connecting the latchhanger with the link, a check-wire arranged to limit movement of the link,l a pulley-segment loose on the hinge-stile of the gate, other IOO in the county of Milwaukee and State of Visoonsin, in the presence of two Witnesses.
OLLE LARSON.
