Letters Patent No. 89,115, dated April 20, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLOWS.
The Schedule referred to in these Lettere Patent; and making part of the same.
To all whom it may con-cern Be it known that I, G. M. ATHERTQN, of Friends- Ville, in the county' of 'Wabasln' and State of Illinois,
have invented a new and useful Improvement iu Plows; and I do hereby decla-re that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and. use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved plow.

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved plow, designed especially for plowing stumpy and rooty ground, but which shall, at the saine time, be so constructed as to be easily adjusted for ordinary plowing; and
It consists in the construction and combination of various parts of the plow, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the plow-beam, to the rear part of which the upper part of the standard B is securely and rigidly attached.
C are the handles, the lower ends of which are pivotcd to the plow-beam A, by the bolt c, and the upper part-s of which are connected and held in their proper relative positions by the round or bar o2.
'lhc rear parts of the handles G are adj ustably supported by thc brace-bars D, through the upper ends of which. the round e2 passes, and the lower ends of which are secured to the rear end of the beam A by the bolt d', which passes through the said rear end of the said beam A, and through slots in the lower ends of the braces D, so that the handles C may be raised or lowered to adjust them to the proper position for the different kinds of plowing'for which the plow may bc used.
E is a casting, formed with a groove or seat upon its rear side, into'which the forward edge of the standard B fits, and which is securedv to the said standard the point of the plow may be raised or lowered to adjust it for the different kinds of plowing.
G is the mould-board, which is securely bolted to the casting E.
H is the point, which is detachably bolted to the cast-ing E, andwhich, for -plowing in -stumpy, rooty, or rough land, is made without a landside, as shown in iig's. 1, 4, and 5.
For ordinary plowing, the point H is formed upon or attached to a landside, I, as shown in figs. 6 and 7, and which is securely bolted to the casting E.
J is the cutter, which is made in about the shape shown in iig. 1, and which is secured to the arm, or support K, by the bolts L1 L2, the bolt L1 passing through the centre of the cutter J, and through a hole in the angle of the arm or support K.
The bolt L2 passes through one or the other of the holes through the cutter J, according as one or the other end of said lcutter may be up, and through one or the other of the holes through the arm K, according to' the position in which the said cutter is adjusted.
The rear end of the arm K is bolted or pivoted to the side ofthe standard B, as shown in fig. 1.
The upper end ofthe arm, or support K, is adjustably secured to the beam A, by a bolt, which passes through said beam A, and through a slot in the curved upper part of the said arm K, as shown in g. 1.
The entire edge of the cutter J is sharpened, so that when the edge of the lower part of the forward edge becomes dull from use, the upper bolt L2 may bereinoved and the cutter J revolved one-half around, bringing another part of said edge into working position.
When this second part or quarter of thel 'edge of the cutter A has become dulled, the bolts L1 Lz may both be removed, and the cutter reversed or turned side for side, so that the other parts of its edge may be brought into working position.
By this construction and arrangement of the cutter J, the said cutter may be used for a long time without its being necessar to remove it for sharpening.
lVhen sing the p ow, should the cutter strike a root too large to be cut, or any other obstruction, by raising the handles C, the cutter will slide up and over said obstruction, and will at once again enter the ground upon the other side of said obstruction.
M is the draught-rod, the rear end of which has a hole, eye, or hook formed in or upon it, through which passes the notched arm N, which is securely attached to the mould-board side of the plow-beam A, as shown in iigs. 1 and 3. A
The forward end ofthe draught-rod M passes through .a hole in the end of the bar O, which is adjustablysecured to a cap, P, attached to the forward end of the beam A by a bolt passing through a slot in the said bar O.
.Lhe other or landside slotted end ofthe arm, or bar O is passed over one or the other of the projections or stops formed upon the cap P, so that the forward end of the draught-rod M may be raised or lowered' according as it is desired to have the plow run deeper or shallower.
By this construction and arrangement ofthe draughtrod M, the width'of the furrow cut may be regulated at pleasure, by moving the said rod M from or toward the plow-beam A, said rod M being at all times kept parallel with said beam.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Y 1. The detachable, adjustable, and reversible cutter J, constructed and operating substantially as herein shown andfdescribed, and for the purpose yset forth.
2. The bent support K, carrying the cutter J, perforated at the angle Ll L, and adjusted upon the plowbeam, by means ofthe curved slot and the set-screw, as herein described, for the purpose specified.
3. The casting E, secured to the beam B by the rod e, and adapted to be adjusted to regulate the pitch of the plow, by means of the Wedge-shaped block F, arranged as herein shown and described.
4:. The slotted bar O, adjusting-cap P, and notched arm N, combined and arranged with the draught-rod M, and plow-beam A, for the purpose of adjusting said rod laterally, so that theline of draught shall be parallel to the beam, as herein shown 'and described.
