GHATELAINB BROOCH WATCH.

PATENT OFFICE.
Y., ASSIGNOR TO DUBOIS WATCH CASE COM- PANY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
CHATELAINE BROOCH-WATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented .Tune 9, 1908.
Application filed January 3, 1908. Serial No. 409,196.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. DEPOL- LIER, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chatelaine Brooch-Vatches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combination of ladys watch and chatelaine to which I have given the name of chatelaine brooch watch, and by which a separate chatelainebrooch and bow for watches that are suspended from the waists are dispensed with, and a very ornamental and attractive ladys watch for direct suspension from the garment supplied, and for this purpose the invention consists of a watch-case provided with a chatelaine-brooch which is hinged to the watch-case at both sides of the pendant, said brooch being composed of two portions,-a lower one hinged to the case and an upper one swiveled to the hinged portion, the swiveled portion bein@l provided with means for attaching the watc to the garment, and with an eye for permitting it to be used with a chain.
The invention consists further of certain details of construction which will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front-elevation of my improved chatelaine-brooch-watch, Fig. 2 is a rearview, Fig. 3 is a side-view, and Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are respectively a front-view, a rear-view and a side-view of a modified construction of the chatelaine-brooch-watch.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, a. represents a watch-case of any approved construction. To the watch-case are applied at both sides of the pendant p hinge-joints formed of perforated ears e to which is hinged a chatelainebrooch which is composed of two parts,-a lower hinged part t and an upper portion t1 which is swiveled to the lower part and providedv at its rear with means for attaching it to the garment. pin-tongue d which is hinged at (Z1 to one side of the swiveled portion b1 and a stationaryk receiving-catch d2 which is attached to the opposite side of the swiveled portion b1, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. To the upper end of These means consist of a the swivel-pin by which the hinged and swiveled portions l) b1 ofthe chatelaine brooch b are connected is applied an eye f1 which is hinged thereto so as to be folded down over the swiveled portion of the chatelaine-brooch or held in upright position thereon for attaching it to a chain in case the watch is to be carried on a chain instead of being applied to the waist or other garment.
The chatelaine brooch Watch just described can be directly attached to the garment without requiring a separate chatelaine-brooch or bow. It can be readily turned up on the hinged portion of the chatelaine-brooch so as to conveniently read off the time when hung o n the garment. The chatelaine-brooch can also be used with watches which have no pendant and stem, such as are wound up by a key or other arrangement from the inside, the chatelainebrooch dispensing with both the brooch and bow.
In place of making the pin-tongue and catch for the watch stationary on the chatelaine-brooch, the pin-tongue d may be attached to a separate bar g which is swiveled to the center of the hinged portion of the chatelaine-brooch, as shown in Figs. 4-6, and which is rovided at one end with a hinge-joint q1 fidi" the pin-tongue and at the other end with a stationary catch g2 for locking the pin-tongue, the bar g being also provided with a hinged eye '(/3 for using the watch with a chain in case the watch is not to be suspended from the garment. The eye g3 can be bent over the end of the pin-tongue adjacent to the catch so as to abut against said catch, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 6, in which position it forms a safety-device for the pin-tongue so as to prevent its unlocking from the catch. When the chatelaine-watch is to be used with a chain, the pin-tongue with its swiveled supporting-bar is moved into vertical position in line with the center of the chatelaine-brooch, and the eye placed in line with the same for receiving the chain; while when it is applied to the garment, the pin-tongue is placed in position across the chatelaine-brooch, the watch being then suspended vertically below the swivel-connection with the chatelaine-brooch.
The 'novel features of the improved chatelaine-brooch-watch are the direct and nondetachable suspension of the same from the garment of the wearer, the use of the chate- Patent:
laine-brooch-watch with a suspension chain, and the use of the hinged suspension-eye as a safety-device for the pin-tongue when the Watch is applied to the garment.
Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 3. The combination, with a watch-case of a chatelaine-brooch hinged thereto and provided with swiveled fastening device Vfor attaching the chatelaine-brooch directly to the garment, and with an eye hinged to said swiveled device for suspending the chatelaine from a chain.
4. The combination, with a watch-case ol' a chatelaine-brooch formed of a lower portion hinged to the watch-case and an upper swiveled portion provided with a hinged pintongue at one side and a catch at the other side and with a hinged eye on the swiveled portion.
In testimony, that l claim the lforegoing as my invention, l have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES L. DEPOLLI'ER.
