To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERTRAM PEROIVAL, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 65 Hazelbourne .road, Balham Hill, Balham, London, S. W., England, have invented new and useful Improvem ents in Winches or the Like for Use with Cords or Ropes Subjected to Tension, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object an improved construction of self-sustaining winch or hoisting apparatus, which is intended to be used for winding on to a drum a cord or the like subjected to tension, such as that due to the pull of a heavy object at the other end of the cord or the like.
Characteristic features of my invention are that the drum of the winch or the like is positively driven when rotated in either direction and ratchet devices are dispensed with, the parts of the winch or the like being locked together immediately rotation ceases by the action of the tension on the cord or the like.
The invention is particularly intended to be used with winches for raising and lowering arc lamps and is described as so applied in the following specification.
In carrying out the invention the drum to which the cord or the like is attached is disposed around a shaft which is rotatably supported at its inner end in a casing or framing. Said shaft is provided with a screwed portion, which freely engages with a corresponding screwed part in the hub of the drum, and also with an outer portion adapted to receive an operating member, handle or crank. The drum and screwed shaft are formed at their outer ends with slotted or cut-away portions which are of such shape that when the operating member or handle is turned in either direction frictional surfaces, forming parts of a clutch, are disengaged to the requisite extent before the drum and screwed shaft rotate as one.
In order that my invention may be understood I will now refer to the accompanying drawings illustrating my invention as applied to an arc lamp winch.
Figure 1 is a front elevation and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of said winch.
The casing or framing of the winch consists of a disk-like base A and an outer cap or cover A, which is secured to said base by means of bolts and nuts or and is slotted as plhown at a for the passage of the cord or the Specification of Letters Patent.

B is the drum to which the cord or the like is attached at any suitable point, such as the lug b. The outer portion of the drum B is provided with a gripping surface B, preferably of coned form, which is adapted to engage with a corresponding gripping surface A provided on the cap or cover A, said surfaces forming the two parts of a clutch. The
drum B is mounted on and around a shaft C which is formed with a screwed portion C adapted to freely engage with a corresponding screwed part B in the hub-of the drum. The screwed shaft 0 is rotatably supported at its inner end in a bearing A in the base A of the casing, said bearing being preferably formed in a boss A projecting from the base A. The drum B is provided at its outer end with a boss B which rests in a bearing A in the cap A of the casing and is supported at its inner end on the exterior of the boss A.
D is an operating handle which is removably mounted on the outer end of the shaft C. The web of the handle D immediately above its boss D passes into a cut-away portion I) in the boss B of the drum B, while the boss D of the handle is formed with a transverse web D which fits into a transverse slot C in the shaft C with suflicient clearance to permit of a slight amount of movement of the handle D on the shaft C during winding.
F is a thrust plate against which a shoulder C on the shaft C is pressed by means of a spring G, this arrangement of thrust plate F and spring G offering a certain resistance to the turning of the shaft 0.
The action of a winch constructed in the above described manner is as follows :Un der normal circumstances the drum is firmly jammed against the casing by the tension of the cord or the like. If it is desired to wind the cord or the like on to the drum B the operating handle D is placed on the outer end of the screwed shaft C and is turned in the forward direction. The result of this movement is that the forward side of the handle will bear against the boss B and will move the drum B on the shaft O towards the base of the casing, thus disengaging the gripping surfaces A B. As soon as the gripping surfaces have been disengaged to the desired extent the shaft C will be taken up, when the drum B, shaft C and handle D will revolve as one and effect winding. To unwind the cord from the drum B the handle D is turned in the reverse direction, when the shaft 0 will be turned by the web D within the drum B and the latter be moved towards the base of the casing until finally the side of the handle D bearing against the boss B will rotate the drum B and shaft O together.
Winches constructed in the above described manner will be found to be especially useful for raising and lowering arc lamps, as apart from simplifying the general construction and rendering it impossible for the lamp to get out of control they enable the reduc tion gear, hitherto generally used in such winches, to be dispensed with.
If desired however the present invention may be used in connection with a winch provided with a reduction gear and in this case the arrangement of operating member or handle, screw and gripping surface operated by said screw may be applied to the first motion shaft instead of to the drum shaft.
Claims.
1. In a self-sustaining winch or hoisting apparatus the combination of a screwed shaft rotatably mounted in the casing or framing of the winch or the like, a clutch consisting of a fixed part and a movable part disposed around the screwed shaft and provided with a screwed portion engaging with the screwed part of the shaft, and an operating member loosely mounted on the outer end of the shaft and engaging with cut away or slotted parts in the shaft and in the movable part of the clutch, said cut-away or slotted parts being such as to allow of an initial rotation of the movable part of the clutch on the screwed shaft during winding and an initial rotation of the shaft within the movable part of the clutch during unwinding, after which initial movements the shaft, the movable art of the clutch and the operating mem er rotate together to effect wincling and unwinding, substantially as de scribed herein.
2. In a self-sustaining winch or hoisting apparatus the combination of a screwed shaft rotatably mounted in the casing or framing of the winch or the like, a gripping surface on the casing or framing, a drum disposed around the screwed shaft and provided with a gripping surface adapted to co-act with a corresponding gripping surface on said casing or framing, a screwed part in said drum engaging with the screwed portion on the shaft, and an operating member or crank loosely mounted on the outer end of the screwed shaft and engaging with cutaway or slotted portions in the shaft and drum, substantially as described herein. In a wincl for use with a cord or the like subjected to tension the combination of a casing consisting of a base and a cap or cover removably secured to said base, a drum supported at its inner end on a boss on the base of the casing and provided at its outer end with a boss fitting a bearing in the cap of the casing, a screwed portion in said drum, a screwed shaft supported at its inner end by the base of the casing, engaging with the screwed portion in the drum and having in its outer end a transverse slot, an operating lever provided with a rib which extends across its boss and is adapted to engage with the transverse slot in the outer end of the screwed shaft, a cut-away portion in the outer boss of the drum, and a friction device interposed between the screwed shaft and the casing, substantially as described herein.
