Description
HQ]. REEDY.
Elevators.
Patented May 5 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' HENRY J. REEDY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN ELEVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,612, dated May 5, 1874 application filed April 2, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY J. REEDY, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hoisting-Machines, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists in the connection, with the platform and rope-drum of a hoistingmachine, of a screw device for giving a lateral movement to the drum-shaft, by which the rope ropeF, and GrlS the drum of the balance-weight rope H. The balance-weight D slides in the usual ways I. The driving-shaft is operated by the rope L on the sheave-wheel K, in the usual way, and is connected to the hoistingshaft by pinion M and spur-wheel N, in the manner shown. The driving-shaft A is journaled so that it has no end play, while in the hoisting-shaft B end play is provided for, so. that it is necessary to have a pinion, M, of a greater width of face than the spur-wheel N, the difference being about equal to the required lateral play or movement of the shaft B. One end of the shaft B'has a screw-thread, P, out upon it, and the journal-box of this end of the shaft has a female screw-thread out within it to fit the screw P, so that, in the revolution of this shaft, it must also move laterally to the extent of the pitch of the screw for each revolution, and the pitch of the screw is equal to the diameter of the ropes F or H. By the operation of this device, as one rope is winding and the other unwinding, the lateral play of the shaft so moves the drums as that the ropes are prevented from winding or unwinding irregularly, and are prevented from becoming entangled, a clear space the thickness of the rope being always in line with the rope for it to wind upon.
It is obvious that differences in construction may be made without any departure from the principles of my inventionas, for example, in place of the journal-bearing having a female screw to fit the screw P, the bearing may be smooth and a set'screw or projection used to engage the thread of the screw P.
I claim 1. In combination with. the platform 0, hoisting-rope F, and drum E, the screw P, operating to give lateral movement to the drum-shaft '13, substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of platform 0, rope F, drum E, shaft B,.drum G, rope H, balanceweight D, and laterally-adjusting screw P, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
HENRY J. REEDY.
