Description
Q9 ky gtiniml W mw.-
l te @anni E. C. PENFELD, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
` Letters Paten: No. 88,979, dated 4pm 13, 1869.
IMPROVED TRUSS-PAD.
To all whom it may concern Be it knownt-hat I, E. O. PENFIELD, of the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania', have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Truss-Pads 5 and that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanyiug drawings, and letters of reference thereon, which form a part of these specifications, sets forth the nature and principles of my improvement, by which my invention may be distinguished from all others of a similar class, which improvements I desire to secure by Letters Patent. l
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 represents a back elevation cfa truss, showing my improvement applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal Vertical section of the same, taken on the line :1; x, g. l. 4
Figure 3 represents a face view or plan of the leverbar, or tongue.
The object of this invention is to afford more certain means of fastening. and holding a truss-pad in whatever position it may be set.
Heretofore it has been fastened by various arrangements of devices, in such a manner as to have its inclination varied at pleasure, and especially by means of levers and set-screws-v acting upon a universal or ball-and-socket joint, so as to bind the ball and its socket together; but it is well known that by these methods of fastening it is not secure, on account of the slipping of the ball upon the smooth surface of the socket. This diculty I overcome by my improvemeut.
To enable others skilled in the art-to make and use my invention, I'Iwill-proceed to describe its construction and operation.
lIn the drawing i B, attached in the ordinary manner.
On the end 'of the arm B is the ball O, made to fit in a socket, d, formed inthe plate e.
A lever-tongue, or bar, f, (see g. 3,) having an opening, i, is attached to the plate e, by means of the screw g.
At the other end of the lever-bar f isa set (thumb) screw, H, passing through the plate e and lever-tongue f. By means of this set-screw H, the lever-bar f forces the ba-ll O into the socket d, or relieves it from said socket.
In the lever-bar j, I form a projecting ridge or ring around the opening i, having an acute edge, which, by coming in contact with the ball C, willfirmly bind and hold upon the periphery of the ball C, and prevent its slipping in the socket d, thereby securely holding the truss-pad in any desired position.
Having thus described the nature and construction -of my invention, p
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'Ihe combination, hereinabove described, consisting of a ball-andsocket (or universal) joint, and the levertongue, (or bar) having an acute angular edge, for
tially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
A represents the body-spring plate, with an arm,
the purpose of securely binding and holding, substan-
