To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK BURSIK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Imrovements in Holders and Fasteners for torm-Sashes and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in holders or fasteners for storm sashes and the like, and the primary object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this character which is adapted to fasten or look the sash, and which is also adapted to hold the sash open.
A further object is to provide an improved device of this character adapted to be readily applied, and which will exert a spring tension upon the sash when closed to produce a tight connection.
A furtherobject is to provide an improved device of this character which will be simple, cheap and durable in construction, and effective and efficient in operation.
To the attainment of these ends, and the accomplishment of other new and useful ob jects, as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts, hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and shown in the accompanying drawing illustrating an exemplification of this invention, and in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a window casing and storm sash, with this improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the storm sash and window casing, showing the sash in locked position. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a holder or fastener constructed in accordance with the rinciples of this invention. Fig. 4 is a etail sectional view illustrating afastener in a position to hold the storm sash open. Fig. 5 is a detail view, partly in section, of a supporting plate for the holder or fastener. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of a modified form of fast ener.
Referring more articularly to the drawing and in this exemp ifi'cation of the invention, the numeral 10 designates generally a win dow casing provided with a blind stop 11, 12 and 13 designate storm sashes.
. The construction of each sash bein the same, the specific description of one wil apply equally as well to the other.
The sash is pivotally supported so as to swing outwardly from the window casing by means of a hanger or separable hinge desig nated generally by the reference numeral 21, the specific construction and operation of which forms the subject-matter of a separate application. These hangers or hinges are preferably located adjacent the upper edges of the sash, and secured to the lower edge or rail of the sash is a fastener or holder. This fastener or holder preferably comprises a body portion 22, one extremity of which is preferably bent back and forth upon itself, as at 23, to form a yielding or spring end, the extremity 24 of which preferably projects beyond the end of the body portion 22 and is deflected laterally for a purpose to be set forth. This body portion 22 is preferably provided with a suitable aperture 25, by means of which the holder and fastener may be secured in osition.
Any suitabf; means may be provided for supporting the holder or fastener, but a simple and efiicient means for accomplishing this purpose comprises a plate 26 which is secured to the rail or sash in any desired or suitable manner, such as by means ofscrews or bolts passing through suitable apertures in the plate and into the sash. A headed lug 27 is provided with a cylindrical body portion 28, and said cylindrical body portion is of a diameter to loosely fit within the aperture 25 in the body portion 22, and is of such a length that when inserted into the aperture 25 the head 27 will rest against one face of the body portion 22. This lug is secured to the plate 26 in any desired or suitable man ner, preferably by means of one end 29 there of being reduced and passed through a suitable aperture of the plate, the extremity thereof being off-set on the rear face of the plate. A suitable handle or arm 30 is connected to the body portion 22 in any desired or suitable manner, preferably by means of the hinge 31, the pintle of which is preferably disposed transversely to the line of-pivotal movement of the .body portion 22 about the lug 27. This arm or member 30 may be of any desired or suitable length, and is provided with a headed knob or projection 32 extending beyond the upper edge of said arm or member, and which 1s located referably adjacent the free extremity thereo Secured to the window casing, preferably to the face of the blind stop 11 thereof, is a plate or member 33, which is provided with a slot 34 extending longitudinally thereof, and disposed on an arc the chord of which is disposed toward the sash 12. This plate is also provided with an enlarged aperture or opening 35 adjacent one end of and comi'nunicating with the slot 34. The holder or fas tener is secured to the window sash, preferably adjacent one of the lower corners thereof, and in such a position that the extremity 24 will project beyond the edge of the sash.
When it is desired to lock the sash, the latter is closed, so as to rest against the blind stop 11, the holder or fastener being previously moved about its point of pivotal support into the position shown. in dotted lines in Fig. 2. After the sash is closed, the holder or fastener may then be moved from its dotted line position about its point of pivotal support, and into the -position shown in full lines in Fig. 2. i
As the free extremity on which is located the knob or button 32 is lowered, the projection 24 of the body portion 22 will be raised, so as to enter the slot 34 in the plate or member 33, the latter being located at a suitable point to permit the extremity 24 to enter the slot therein when the holder is moved to the position as shown in full lines in Fig. 2.
As the holder or fastener is moved into position, the extremity 24 will engage the walls of the slot 34, and the highest point of the are formed by the slot is at a point to be engaged by the extremity 24. i/Vhen the holder or fastener is in a proper position to lockthe sash, it will be noted that a tension will be exerted upon the spring or yielding end 23 of the body portion 22, thereby drawing the sash toward the blind stop 11 to form a tight connection. If desired, a suitable stop 36 may be secured to the sash to form a support for the arm or member 30.
When it is desired to unlock the sash, all that is necessary is to raise or elevate the free end of the arm or member 30, on which is located the knob or button 32, to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, which will cause the extremity 24 of the body ortion 22 to pass out of the slot 34 in the piane of the member 33. When the holder or fastener is in this position, or the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the sash may be moved outwardly so as to swing upon the hanger or hinge 21.
It will be noted that when the holder has assumed the position shown in dotted lines in'Fig. 2, the knob or button 32 will stand adjacent the blind stop 1]., and when the sash is swung about its hinge or support 21 to the position as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing, the arm or member 30 may be moved about its point of ivotal su port 31 with relation to the body 22 untl the knob or button 32 is adjacent the enlarged opening35, and when in this position the body 22 may be moved slightly further about its point of pivotal support, to cause the knob or button 32 to enter the enlarged opening 35, and by still further lowering the free extremity of the arm or member the head of the knob or button 32 will pass behind the plate or member 33, while its shank will travel in the slot 34, as shown more clearly in Fig. 4 of the drawing; and when in this position the weight of the sash will cause the shank to engage one of the walls of the slot 34, and hold the sash in its adjusted position; the body portion 22 and the end 23 being of such a length that when the holder or fastener is in the position shown in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawing, the extremity 24 thereof will not project beyond the lower edge of the sash.
The modified form of fastener shown in Fig. 6 of the drawing, is particularly adapted for use with ordinary sashes, and preferably comprises an integral member comprising the body 22, one end 23 of which is bent or deflected in the same manneras that shown in Fig. 3 to produce a yielding extremity 24, and the other extremity 37 is deflected laterally to form a projecting portion adapted to be used as a handle for moving the holder or fastener about its point of pivotal support. If desired, a suitable handle 38 may be provided adjacent the deflected. extremity 37.
In order that the invention might be fully understood by those skilled in the art, the details of the foregoing embodiment thereof have been thus specifically described, but
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1'. The combination of a window casing, a sash movably supported adjacent the easing, a locking member pivotally mounted intermediate its ends on the sash, one end of said member on one side of the pivot being bent back and forth upon itself to form a yielding extremity, and a handle operatively related to the other end of the member, said casing being provided with an apertured portion adapted to receive and exert a tension on the yielding extremity of the said locking member.
2. The combination of a window easing, a sash pivotally supported adjacent the easing, a locking member mounted on the sash for pivotal movement in a plane parallel with the face of the sash, said member bein provided with a yielding extremity, and sai casing being provided with an a erture adapted to receive the extremity an exert a tension thereon when the member is in an' operative position and a handle pivoted to said member, said handle being movable in the same plane with the body portion and adapted for independent movement in a plane transverse to the plane of movement of the said member.
3. The combination of a casing, a sash pivotally supported adjacent the casing, a member mounted on. the sash for pivotal movement in a plane parallel with the face of the sash, said member being provided with a projecting extremity, and said casing being provided with an apertured portion adapted to receive the said extremity of the member to lock the sash closed, and a handle pivoted to the member, said handle being adapted to be moved independently in a plane transverse to the plane of movement of the member, and means operatively related to the handle and adapted to enter the said aperture when the handle is moved and when the said member is in an inoperative position for holding the sash away from the casing.
4. The combination of a casing, a sash pivotally supported adjacent the casing, a member mounted on the sash for pivotal movement in a plane parallel with the face of the sash, said member being provided with a projecting extremity, a plate secured to the casing, said late being provided with a slot having an en argement, said slot being adapted to receive the rojecting extremity of the member to lock the sash closed, and a handle pivoted to the member and adapted to be independently moved in a plane transverse to the Cplane of movement of the said member, sai handle being provided with a headed projection, and said projection being adapted to enter the said enlargement and pass behind the plate to hold the sash away from the casing.
5. The combination of a window casing, a sash movably supported adjacent the casing, a locking member pivotally mounted intermediate its ends on the sash, one end of said member on one side of the pivot being bent back and forth upon itself to form a yielding extremity, a handle operatively related to the other end of the member, and a member secured to the casing, said member being provided with a portion disposed on a curve and said curved portion being adapted to be engaged by the yielding extremity of the locking member to draw the sash against the casing.
