sronM-sAsH BRACKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 23, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRA W. SIPES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilmette, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Storm-Sash Bracket, of which the following is a specification.
The subject of the present invention is a storm sash bracket which is designed to support a hingedly hung storm sash in opened or closed positions.
The invention contemplates the provision of means for looking the bracket to hold the sash when closed.
A further object within the contemplation of the invention is the provision of means for supporting the arms when in extended position to hold the sash opened.
The invention also contemplates duction of a simple, durable and storm sash bracket.
With the foregoing and other objects 1n view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
A practical embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the device, a fragment of the sash and sill being shown, the sill shown in extended the proeflicient in section, the device position in dotted lines;
F1g. 2 is a plan view of the device in extended position;
Fig. 3 is a'plan view of the latch or look, the bracket arms shown in section;
Fig. 4 is a view in elevation of the sill attaching bracket, the connecting in section.
Referring to the drawing by numerals of reference -The outer sill of a window is indicated at 1, and a fragment of a storm sash is seen at 2.
In carrying out the invention an attaching or supporting bracket 3 is secured by screws or otherwise to the upper surface of the outer sill 1 at that portion of the sill lying between the regular sash (not shown) and:
pin shown Patented June 17, 1919.
Serial No. 218,819.
the storm sash 2. The upstanding end of the bracket 3 is provided with a recess 4 which has a narrow entrance or mouth leading to an enlarged head of circular formation. A flattened headed pin 5 is adapted to enter the recess 4 in which it is locked except in one position of the pin, as will be readily understood.
The pin 5 is riveted or otherwise secured to one end of a supporting arm 6 from which it extends laterally. The other end of the arm 6 merges into an attenuated portion having an angled or laterally extending finger 7 which is adapted to overlie an arm 8 when the bracket is in extended position and support the arms.
he arm 8 is pivotally secured to the arm 6 and has riveted or otherwise secured thereto a metal strip 9 which is slightly resilient and offset at one portion to form a latch adapted to snap past the arm 6 when the storm sash is closed and so look the arms together.
Pivota-lly attached to the other end of the arm 8 is an angled attaching bracket 10 which is secured by screws or otherwise to the sash 2.
From the foregoing it will be understood that when it is desired to open the storm sash, the latch 9 is released from the arm 6 and the sash pushed outwardly until the arms 6 and 8 are in extended position, at which time the finger 7 will come into contact with the upper edge of the arm 8 and prevent the arms from pivoting beyond the position of extension. The arms will then serve to hold the sash opened.
en the sash 2 is removed in the summer time the pin 5 is readily and easily withdrawn from the recess 4 and the sash re moved without the necessity of unscrewing the parts. V
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and sought by Letters Patent, is r- In a'device of the class described, a pair of arms having their inner ends connected; means for pivoting the outer ends of the arms, respectively, to a frame and to a sash; and a spring strip having one of its ends secured to the outer surface of one arm and extended in hook-shape across the edge of said arm and along the opposite surface of said arm in spaced relation thereto to provide for the reception of the other arm w'hen the arms are folded into alin'einerrt, the strip being provided with a lateral shoulder c0 as my own, I have hereto ai'fixed my signaoperating With the said other arm and terture in the presence of two Witnesses. minating in a guiding finger adapted to IRA V SIPES receive the said other arm and to direct the same into coiiperating relation with respect lVitnesses': t0 the seat. N. P. SOHOPEN,
In testimony that I claim the foregolng PETER J. WAGNER.
