UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN G. F. BORGER, OF GURWENSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
CARPET-FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN C. F. Bonenn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Curwensville, county of Clearlield, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Carpet- Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in carpet fasteners, and has for its object to provide an exceedingly simple and effective device which may be set in the floor and by which a carpet or rug may be secured in place along the edges without the use of tacks and which will permit the removal of the carpet or rug without injury thereto.
With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a portion of the carpet held in place by my improvement. Fig. 2, a section at the line X-X of Fig. 1 showing the operating members of the fastener, and Fig. 3, a section at right angles to Fig. 2.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied I provide a barrel or casing A having a flange I-I around the upper end, said casing here shown as made in two parts, but which, of course, may be cast in a single piece, and this barrel is adapted to be set into the floor by simply boring a hole a fraction smaller than the diameter of the barrel and driving the latter into place.
B represents the removable member which is provided with a shank C, having ratchet teeth D formed upon one side thereof adapted to engage with the stationary tooth E formed upon or set in one side of the barrel, and this shank has secured thereto the flat spring F adapted to bear upon the opposite side of the barrel so as to force the ratchet teeth into engagement with the tooth E as will be readily understood. The fastener B has formed therewith the prong G adapted to Specification of Letters Patent.

pass through the carpet and hold the same in place.
In practice when it is desired to secure a carpet in place it is only necessary to press the fastener B to one side against the action of its fiat spring so as to disengage the ratchet teeth from the stationary tooth and draw the fastener upward, and after the carpet has been laid the fastener is forced downward until the prong passes through the edge of the carpet where it will be held by the engagement of the teeth, and when it is desired to remove the carpet the fastener is again pressed sidewise so as to disengage the teeth and drawn upward which will free the carpet; of course it is to be understood that a number of these fasteners are placed along the edge of the carpet so as to hold it at given points. By the use of my improvement when a room is once fitted with these fasteners a carpet may be laid or removed without the use of tacks and at a great saving of time and annoyance.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, a carpet fastener consisting of a barrel adapted to be set in the floor, a movable member fitted to slide within said barrel, ratchet teeth formed upon the movable member, and a stationary tooth formed upon one wall of the barrel and a flat. spring for forcing the tooth into engagement.
2. The herein described combination of a barrel adapted to be set in the floor, a movable, member, a shank formed with said member, ratchet teeth formed upon the shank, a stationary tooth carried by one wall of the barrel, a flat spring secured to the movable member and adapted to force the teeth into engagement and permit the movable member to be forced sidewise to carry the teeth out of engagement, and a prong formed with the movable member adapted to engage the carpet, as specified.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
JOHN C. F. BORGER.
