Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, LUKE T. BURNS, citizen of the United States, residing at 71 Laurel street, WVaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Automatic Gas-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to automatic apparatus, and more particularly to automatic gas burners, and has for its object to provide a burner including a valve arranged for operation by a thermostatic mechanism arranged to receive the action of a flame held in position to light the gas.
Another object is to provide a burner of simple structure and arrangement, and one so made that its interior may be easily reached when desired.
Other objects and advantages will be ap parent from the following description and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is an elevational view of the present burner showing a match held in position to operate the thermostatic mechanism Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the casing; Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the casing and through the interior mechanism; Fig. 4 is a top plan. Referring now to the drawings, the present invention comprises a vertical cylindrical casing 5 interiorly threaded at its upper portion as shown at 6, to receive a depending threaded flange 7 carried by a cap 8 of conical shape and terminating at its apex in a tip receiving tube 9 in which is engaged a tip 10.
Disposed Within the casing, there is an inverted hollow conical member 11, having a passage formed therethrough at its apex, as shown at 12, and provided with a stu'lling box 13. At its major end, the member 11 is provided with an outwardly extending flange 14, receiving thereupon the peripheral portions of a diaphragm 15 formed of rubber or other suitable material, and disposed upon the peripheral portions of this diaphragm, there is a flange 16, similar to the flange 14 and carried by a major end of a second hollow conical member 17 extending into the cap 8. This member 17 terminates at its apex in a closed tube 18 extending through the cap and into position to receive the action of a match flame held in position to light the gas at the tip 10.
The casing 5 has an opening A in its bottom 5 surrounded by a depending interiorly threaded sleeve B, for connection with a gas supply pipe C. A horizontal partition plate 19 is located in the lower portion of the casing 5 and is provided with an opening 20 surrounded by a downwardly directed valve seat 21 and traversed by a guide member 22 having an opening 23 in which a valve rod 24 is slidably engaged. This valve rod is also engaged through the stufling box 13, extending into the lower conical member 11 and passing through a second guide 25 extending horizontally within the member 11. The valve rod 24 extends downwardly through the opening 20 and carries a valve 26 at its lower end arranged to seat in the valve seat 21. A spring 27 is engaged with the valve rod, resting at its lower end against the guide 22 and at its upper end against a pin 28 en gaged in the rod. At its upper end, the valve rod 24 is threaded as shown at 29 and is engaged in an interiorly threaded stem 30 carried by a cup 31, which receives a pad 32 resting against the under face of the diaphragm 15.
The upper conical member 17 contains a quantity of mercury or other matter susceptible of marked expansion and contraction under thermal action, this matter extending into the tube 18, and it will thus be understood that when the tube is subjected to the action of heat, the mercury will expand to press the diaphragm downwardly and move the rod 24 to unseat the valve 26, when the gas will be free to pass from the tip 10 to be ignited. As will be seen, the arrangement of the lower conical member 11 prevents the passage of gasto the diaphragm 15 and consequent deteriorating efl'ect thereupon.
WVith the present invention, it will be seen that the gas may be initially turned on from a single valve in all parts of a building at once, the escape of gas being prevented until the valve 26 is opened in the manner described. All lights are of course extinguished by turning off the controlling valve. The present invention may also be used in connection with individual turn plugs, the escape of gas being prevented during the lighting of a match after the gas has been turned on.
Vhat is claimed is:
1. In a mechanism of the class described, the combination with a casing, of a tip communicating with the casing, a valve arranged to govern the supply of gas to the tip, means for holding the valve normally closed, a container located Within the casing, a diaphragm in the container, a closed tube communicating with the container at one side of the diaphragm, a filling in'said portion of the container, a valve rod connected with the valveand located at the opposite side of the diaphragm for movement when the diaphragm is moved and a guide for the rod.
2. In a thermostatic mechanism, the combination with hollow conical member's open at their ma or ends and having outwardly extending flanges in parallel relation, of a diaphragm secured between the flanges, a closed tube communicating with the interior of one of said members, expansive matter within said member and extending into the tube, a guide in the other conical member, said member having an opening at its minor end and a rod slidably engaged in the guide and in the opening and disposed to receive the diaphragm against its inner end.
