AUTOMATIC CUT-OFF VALVE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automatic Out-Off Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gas-burners of the type having a valve near the end of the burner which is opened by the expansion of a small quantity of mercury when heated operating a valve-controlling device and closed when the mercury is allowed to cool and contract.
The main object of my invention is to provide a gas-burner with a valve that will automatically open when the burner-tip is heated, as by a lighted match, and permit a flow of gas therefrom and which will close if the flame is extinguished accidentally or purposely without turning the usual tip by which the flow of gas is ordinarily checked.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents in vertical section, enlarged, my improved gas-burner with the valve opened for the flow of gas. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the valve being closed.

1 indicates a hollow metal gas-tip, through which a small tube 2 passes diagonally from top to bottom, its upper end terminating at the center of the tip. where it is provided with a slit or two small openings common to gas-burners. Opening into the bottom of the tip 1 in its vertical axis is a valve-controller 8. comprising a series of expansible flattened receptacles 4, vertically placed with respect to one another and connected by hollow necks 5 and resembling a deeply-corrugated tube, the tip and valve-controller forminga continuous chamber, which is filled with mercury. Screwed into an opening through the bottom of the valve-controller is the stem 6 of a valve 7. The lower end of the tip 1 is of cylindrical form and joined by shrinking to a tubular body 8, closed at its lower end by a diaphragm 9, in which a central valve-seat 10 for the valve 7 is formed. The tubular body 8 is tightly fitted into the upper end of a tube or gas-burner 11.
Before placing the tubular body in the gasburner 11 the valve-stem is unscrewed from the valve-controller and the interior thereof and of the tip 1 filled with mercury through the opening. The valve-stem is then replaced. The several parts are so proportioned that when the mercury is cold its bulk is reduced and the valve-controller contracts, thereby raising the valve 7 to its seat 10, which will stop the outflow of gas. To cause a flow of gas from the burner, the regular tap is turned as usual and a lighted match applied to the tip. The mercury therein will almost immediately become heated, the quantity being small, and expand. This will cause the valvecontroller from its expansible property to lengthen and open the valve, permitting gas to flow upwardly through the small tube 2 and out of the tip, where it will be lighted by the match. As the temperature increases the valve will continue to open until the full capacity of the burner is reached.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. In a gas-burner, a hollow tip, and a hollow expansible valve-controller both adapted to be filled with an expansible fluid, a gas-tube passing through said tip, and a valve con nected to said controller to be opened and closed by the expansion and contraction of said expansible fluid.
2. In a gas-burner, a hollow tip, and a hollow valve-controller, opening into said tip and both adapted to be filled with mercury, agastube passing through said tip from top to bottom, and a valve operated by the expansion and contraction of said valve-controller when the mercury in said tip is heated or cooled.
3. A gas-burner having a valve therein, a hollow tip, a valve-controller comprising a series of expansible flattened receptacles connected to one another and to said hollow tip.
