To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Phillipsburg, in the county of Phillips and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oultivators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cultivators, and more particularly a riding cultivator in which the shovel beams are adjustable laterally and vertically, they being supported at their rear ends byrods connected with masts which are pivoted to the frame of the machine.
The object of the invention is to provide a machine of this kind embodying simplicity of construction, and also one which can be easily operated.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the machine. Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation.
Referring specifically to the drawings, the wheels 5 of the machine are mounted on an arched axle 6 which also supports a seatirame comprising longitudinal side-bars 7 connected at their front ends so as to form a U-shaped frame. The rear ends of the bars, behind the axle, are connected by a cross-bar 8 carrying a seat 9. The tongue 10 is fastened to the iront end of the seat-frame and also to a cross-bar 11 connecting the sidebars 7. 1
To the iront end of the seat-frame is secured a depending draft-bar 12 to which are gimbal-jointed at 13 the shovel beams. The draft-bar is braced by a bar 14 4extending across the top of the tongue and to the ends of the draft-bar.
Each shovel beam has 'two branches 15 and 16, respectively, extending on opposite sides of the wheels 5, and connected at their rear ends. Five shovels are carried by the shovel-beams. Two shovels are located on opposite sides oi the wheels, and one is behind the wheels. The shovels alongside the wheels are located in different planes, the branches being offset for this purpose as indicated at 1S.
Extending parallel and secured to the arched portion ofthe axle 6 is a beam 19 having arched portions 20 extending over the Wheels so as to clear the same. To this beam are pivoted at 21 masts 22 which support the shovel beams, the outer ends of t e masts being connected to the rear ends of the shovel-beams by rods 23. A supporting mast and connection as herein described is provided for each branch of the shovel-beams, The masts are also provided with the usual springs 24. The beam 20 outside the wheels 5, is connected by bars 25 with the draft-bar 12, and the side-bars 7 are also connected by bars 26 with the draft-bar. These bars serve to brace the frame of the machine, and also ail'ord means for attaching the mastsprngs 24, the bars being provided with brackets 27 for this purpose.
A cultivator constructed as herein described can be easily operated, its parts are simple and few, and it is strong and durable. The shovel-beams are adjusted vertically by ,swinging the masts 22 forwardly or rearwardly which can be readily done by taking hold of the bars 23 they being provided with handles 28 for this purpose. As the shovelbeams are gimbal-jointed to the draft-bar 12 they can also be adjusted laterally. To the axle 6 is connected a hand lever 29 for raising and lowering the machine in the usual manner.
I claim 1. A cultivator comprising a wheeled frame carrying a draft-bar, shovel-beams connected to the draft-bar, said beams having branches between which the wheels travel, a beam secured to the axle and having an arched portion extending over the wheels, masts pivoted to said beam, and a connection between the masts and the rear ends of `the branches of the shovel-beams.
2. A cultivator comprising a wheeled frame carrying a draft-bar, shovel-beams connected to the draft-bar, said beams having branches between which the wheels travel, a beam secured to the axle and having an arched portion extending over the wheel, masts pivoted to the beams, a connection between the masts and the rear ends of the branches of the shovel-beams, braces extending from the mast-supporting beams outside the wheels and from the frame between the wheels, respectively, to the draftbar, and springs connected at their ends to the masts and to the braces, respectively.
