SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No 373,3L3, dated November 15, 1887.

To all whom it may concern.-

. Be it known that I, JAMES H. DLAMATTER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Earlville, in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention pertains to certain new and useful improvements in cultivators, having reference more particularly to that class of wheelcultivators carrying scrapers; andit' consists in the disposition and combination of the parts,substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view.

The object of this invention is to provide a cultivator whereby the downdraft is removed bolts, the inner right-angular arms,a.,of short axles a aflwhereon are designed to be secured the ordinary carrying-whee1s,B B. The horizontal cross-bar a of the frame Ais additionally secured or braced by means of two inclined supporting rods or bars, a a connected to the inner opposite sides of the side bars, a, and to the under side of said cross-bar, as shown.

C is a supporting-bar or supplementary tongue, secured at its rear end to the forward edge of the connecting-bar a,at about the center thereof, and the same is further secured by means of two corresponding inclined brace bars or rods, 12 b, secured at their rear ends to the inner surfaces of the side bars, a, by suitable seeuringbolts. At their forward ends said brace-bars b are secured to the supporting-bar or supplementary tongue 0 by a removable bolt, O, passed through apertures in the ends thereof and any one of the three apertures, 7), formed in said bar or tongue.

To about the middle of the space formed on the cross-bar a, on either side of the rear end of the bar orv tongue 0, are secured approximately U-shaped supporting-brackets D D, the same being retained in position by means of securing-bolts passed through the upper and lower portions of said brackets and corresponding apertures in the cross-bar a.

D D are two corresponding hooks secured to the rear open ends of the U-shaped brackets D by means of pivotal bolts cl d, and at the outer rear ends of the straight and bent plates comprising said hooks the same are provided with upturned or hooked ends,as shown.

E is the ordinary tongue or pole, to the rear end of which are secured in any suitable manner the forward convergent ends .of the dragbars 6 e, to which are connected the ends of the scraper-connecting bars 6, carrying at their lower ends the ordinary scrapers, as shown. To this end of the tongue E are also connected the forward lower ends of the handle-bars e. To this tongue E, near its forward end, is connected the forward lower end of the supporting-bar of supplementary tongue 0, the rear end of said tongue, together with the scrapers, being disposed between the side bars of the central supporting-frame, as shown.

F F are two connecting-chains secured at their upper forward ends to the lower ends of apertured barsf f, in any one of the apertures of which are secured the rear hooked ends of the supportinghooks D. To the lower rear ends of these connecting-chains F are secured suitable coil-springs, f f, attached to the upper projecting ends of suitable bolts passed through the drag-bars 6. By this arrangement said drag-bars, together with the scrapers, can be secured at the desired point with relation to the cross-beam a of the frame A.

To the under side of the beam to, at the center thereof, is secured an ordinary hook, f, as shown,whereon can be secured the upper open head of an ordinary bolt attached to the rear end of the tongue E, whereby the scrapers and drag-bars can be held elevated when desired.

From what has been said it will be seen that the central supportingfraine, A, occupies an LII inclined position, and that the earryingwheels are projected a short distance in front thereof, as shown, and that the supporting-bar or supplementary tongue 0 serves to hold or retain said frame in that position.

In operation the scrapers and drag-bars will pull rearward] y on the upper part of the frame A, bringing the carrying-wheels forward of said frame, thus giving the plow a leverage and thereby take the downdraft from the necks of the horses, which is a desideratum in this class of inventions. By adjusting the bolt 0 of the bars or rods 1) in the forward end of the three apertures of the bar or tongue 0 the carrying-wheels will be drawn forward, thereby giving the scraper more leverage, and by placing said bolt in the real-most one of said apertures the leverage is removed from the bar or tongue, thus providing for the use of a large or small team, as the case may be.

It will be observed that one of the principal features embodied in my invention is the method of supporting the plow or shovels solelyon wheels in connection with the chains.

I claim as my invention 1. The combination,with the tongue or pole and the drag-bars having the scrapers, of the central inclined frame, the pivotallysecured hooks, the connecting-chains, the apertured plates, and the springs, substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination, with the tongue or pole and thedrag-bars, of the inclined frame, the supporting-bar or supplementary levcr,the inclined brace bars, the pivotally secured hooks, and the connectingchains, substantially as shown and described. v

3. In a cultivator, the combination, with the tongue and the drag-bars and the rearwardly-inclined frame, of the hooks having outer upturned ends, the U-shaped brackets, the pivotal bolts, the apertured plates,and the connecting-chains, said plates being secured to said hooks, substantially as shown and described.
