UNITED STATES ZADOK RUSSELL BROWN, OF LODI, NEW YORK.
BAG-HOLDER.
Application filed January To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ZADoK RUssELL BROWN, a citizen of the United States, re siding at Lodi, in the county of Seneca and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bag holders designed for use in supporting bags and like receptacles while being filled with grain or other material, and has for its objects to provide a comparatively simple, inexpensive device of this character whereby the receptacle may be conveniently filled, one which will properly support the bag during the filling operation, and one by which the bag may be raised and maintained in suspended condition while being filled, thus to insure proper packing of the material.
lNith these and other objects in view, the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bag holder embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a base on which is erected a pair of spaced, vertical guide standards 2 sustained by diagonal braces 3 and connected by opposed pairs of guide members or straps 4, there being arranged for reciprocationv between the standards 2 a vertical follower member or bar 5, which is of a length to project at its upper end above the standards 2, while attached to the upper vertical end of the follower is an open ended hopper 6 composed of sheet metal or other suitable material.
The hopper 6, which is provided with downwardly convergent walls, is maintained in proper position on the follower 5 by means of a spacing block 7 which, together with the hopper, is secured in place by bolts or other fastening members, there being applied around the lower end of the hopper a reinforcing and stiffening band 9 above which is secured a plurality of spaced bag engaging members or hooks 10.
Pivoted between its ends on the rear face of one of the standards 2 and by means of a pintle 11 is a lever 12 provided at its outer end with a hand piece 13 having its inner end pivoted, as at 14, to a link 15 in turn pivoted at its upper end, as at 16, to the follower 5.
The link 15 is pivoted to the follower 5 at a Specification of Letters Patent.

! point between the cross pieces 4 so that the follower is incapable of being withdrawn from the stand of the device as long as the link is secured to thepivot 15. This is advantageous for the reason that the hopper can be taken hold of as a handle when the device is to be lifted, and the strand part of the device will hang on the follower by means of the link abutting the top strap or member 4.
In practice, the bag or other receptacle to be filled is en aged with the hooks 10 and the outer end of the lever 12 thrown downwardly, thereby moving the follower 5 upward to raise the receptacle to suspended position above the base 1, after which the grain or other material is introduced into the hopper 6 for filling the receptacle. hen the lever 12 reaches the limit of its downward movement, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, the link 15 will be disposed on one side of the center line passing through the pivots 11 and 16 and the lever and link which form a pair of toggle links are prevented from collapsing by the outer end of the lever engaging the lower strap 4 that serves as a stop. The lever and link thus constitute a lock for holding the hopper and bag suspended thereon in raised position and the weight of the sustained parts maintain the lever and link in locked position.
It is to be observed that owing to the receptacle being held suspended above the base the material will properly pack, and further that after the bag has been filled and upon movement of the lever 12 to releasing position the follower and hopper, together with the bag attached to the latter, will drop by gravity, thus to settle and pack the material in the receptacle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A device of the class described comprising a stand, a follower guided on the stand, a fixed hopper secured to the upper end of the follower, a foot lever fulcrumod on the stand, a link connected with the lever and follower and arranged to hold the free end of the lever upwardly when the follower is in lowered position, and a member disposed directly below the fulcrum of the lever for engaging the latter when the follower is in raised position, the weight of the follower and attached parts serving to hold the point of connection between the lever and link out of line with the fulcrum of the lever and point of connection of the link with the follower.
2. The combination of a stand comprising a pair of spaced standards, a pair of cross members connected with the standards and suitably spaced apart, a follower guided be tween the standards, a hopper secured to the follower, a foot lever fulcrumed on one of the standards at a point between the members and adapted to swing on a horizontal axis, a link pivotally connected with one end of the lever, a pivotal connection between the link and follower at a point intermediate the members, and means for attaching a bag to the hopper, the lower cross member serving as a stop for the free end of the lever to hold the latter and linkagainst movement under 15 K the weight of the follower and attached parts, and the said link serving to engage the upper cross member to prevent the follower from being withdrawn from the stand.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature 20 in presence of two witnesses.
