LUOENA STAFFORD, OF SPOKANE, WASHINGTON.
HAIR-DYER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4, 1908.
Application filed June 25. 1907. Serial No. 380,705.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LUCENA STAFFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Washington, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Dyers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hair dyers, and has for its object, to provide a device Whereby a few hairs, or a single hair, for that matter, may be dyed Without necessarily eXposing to the dye, the entire body of the hair of the head. For instance, a few hairs may have turned white or gray and it is desired to dye these hairs the same color of the remain ing hairs of the head, then by the use of this device the gray or ,white hairs may be dyed without the necessity of applying the dye to the entire head of hair, thereby avoiding certain injurious effects to the hair.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown my device.
Figure 1, is an elevation of the device, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is an enlarged elevation of the end of one of the prongs of the device, Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the same and Fig. 5 is an elevation of one of the pads or cushions secured to the end of the prongs.
The main body of my device might be said to consist of a flat piece of steel bent into the shape of a hair-pin, or into the shape of the letter U, approximately, but elongated, as
indicated in the drawings at 10, With a pad or cushion 11 secured to each end thereof, on the inside, so that the two pads or cushions may be brought into contact with each other by the pressing together of the two prongs of the device. In order that the pads or cushions may be removed and replaced by others, I have provided a piece of steel 12 and secured the same to the inner surface of the ends of the prongs of the device, the edges 13 of the steel 12 being slightly curled upward and inward, to serve as a retaining means for the pads or cushions and also permit of their removal by hand.
When it is desired to use the device in dyeing, it is only necessary to saturate the pads or cushions 11 with the proper liquid dyeing material, take the device in the hand, grip the hair to be dyed at the surface of the scalp by the open end of the device and pass the pad or cushion portion along the hair to the end thereof, repeating this operation until the desired result is obtained.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is,
In a device for dyeing hair, an approximately U shaped member, elongated, provided at the open end thereof with a pad or cushion on the inner surface of each prong, such pads or cushions being retained in their positions by a member engaging their side edges and a portion of their exposed surfaces said member being attached to the prongs of the said U shaped member, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
LUCENA STAFFORD.
