GARMENT HOLDER.
APPLIQATION FILED AUG. 1s. 190e.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HUGO C. KRAUSE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO CHARLES TURNER BROWN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
GARMENT-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 26, 1907.
Application filed August 13. 1906. Serial No. 330.459.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGO C. KRAUsn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Holders, of which the following, when taken in connectionwith the drawing accompanying and forming a part hereof, is a complete description, sufficient to enable those skilled in the art to which it pertains to understand, make, and use the same.
The object of this invention is to obtain a garment holder adapted to be attached to l hose supporters, garters, and other like articles of apparel, which will be simple in construction, consisting of few parts, all of which may be easily and economically made, and which parts may be also economically assembled to 'produce a sightly device which will be durable, not liable to get out of order and easily operated by persons not familiar therewith.
A further object of this invention is to obtain a device of the character named in which the movable member of the jaws thereof will be opened by movement of the lever of the device in one direction and closed and locked in the closed position when the lever is moved in the opposite direction.
In the drawing referred to Figure 1 is a plan view of a blank from which is obtained the movable member of the jaw of the device embodying this invention, the broken lines in such figure indicating the lines on which such blank is bent to form it up. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the movable member of the jaw of the device embodying this invention, formed up from the blank illustrated in Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a blank from which the combined base and rigid member ofthe jaw of the device embodying this invention is obtained, the broken lines in such figure indicating the lines on which such blank is bent to form it up. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the combined base and rigid member of the jaw of the device embodying this invention, formed up from the blank illustrated in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a plan view of a blank from which the opening and closing lever ofthe device embodying this invention is obtained. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the opening and closing lever of the device embodying this invention, obtained by forming up the blank illustrated in Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the device embodying this invention in a closed position. Fig. S is a top plan view of the device embodying this invention in a closed position. Fig. 9 is a side elevation of the device embodying this invention in an open position.
A reference letter applied to designate a given part is used. to vindicate such part throughout the several :figures of the drawing wherever the same appears.
A is the blank from which the movable jaw (B) illustrated in Figs. 2, 7, 8 and 9, is obtained.
a is the line on which blank A is bent up at the edges thereof to obtain a strengthening flange when desired, at end b of such jaw and a, a', are broken lines indicating the commencement and end of the bend whereby curved portion l) of movable jaw B is obtained.
b is the end of the movable jaw B which is arranged to engage with the openingand closing lever (G) hereinafter described.
D, Fig. 3, is the blank from which the combined base and rigid jaw E (Fig. 4) is obtained.
d is the line on which the blank D may be bent up to obtain a strengthening flange on the combined base and rigid j aw E.
d', d', and d, d respectively, are broken lines on which the blank D is bent at the time and for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
E is the combined base and rigid jaw of the device embodying this invention and e, e', are fingers or projections thereon. The fingers or projections e, c', are, )rior to the assembling of the several parts of this device, in a substantially vertical position, as illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawing.
F (Fig. 5) is a blank from which the movable opening and closing lever G, (Figs. 6, 7, 8, and 9) is obtained. The curved part g of the lever G is obtained by bending up the portion of the blank F to the left of the broken line f, in Fig. 5.
g is the engaging end of lever G and g is the handle end of such lever.
To assemble the several parts B, E and G it is simply necessary to lay the parts B and G on the combined base and rigid jaw E, when such rigid jaw is in the form illustrated in Fig. 4 of tliedrawing, and to then bend the fingers or projections e, e, respectively over on lines d', (l, so that the projections c, e, will engage with the lever G in the inside of the curved portion g thereof and so that the projections e, e, will engage with the inside, (or upper side) of the curved portion b of the movable jaw B. T7l/'hen thus assembled the lever G may be turned on but cannot be removed from the combined base and rigid jaw E andby the turning of such lever G into the position thereof illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8 of the drawing the end g thereof will engage with end b of the movable jawrr B and force such movable jaw into substantially the position thereof illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8 of the drawing; at which time the lever G, as illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8, by the end g thereof engaging with end b of movable jaW B locks such jaW in such closed position.
. When the lever G is moved into substantially the position thereof illustrated in Fig. 9 of the drawing the lever G at point g3 thereof engages with the end b of movable jaw B forcing such movable jaw into an opened .position substantially as shown in Fig. 9 of the drawing.
H, H, are rubber pads which may be placed in he movable jaw B and in comined base and rigid jaw E.
When the jaws are opened as illustrated in Fig. 9 articles of clothing, as hose and the like may be placed between the same and when the lever G is moved, as by means of handle g, into the position thereofv illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8 of the drawing, any article between the jaws of the device is firmly 4held thereby.
I, Fig. 9, is a cord or strap to which the device is attached by turning the projections e. e down thereonto on lines d, d, respectively.
The curved portion g of lever G and the end b of movable jaw B extend substantially as shown, a suflicient distance so that when the lever G is down to close the jaw B onto the combined base and jaw E such movable jaw is locked in such closed position by the engagement of the end g of leverV G with the end b of movable jaw B.
The severalparts B, E and Gare preferably made of sheet metal as thereby greater strength and durabilityl is obtained than Where other material of the same thickness is used.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent is 1. In a garment holder, a combined base and rigid jaw, in combination with a movable jaw and a movable lever, the adjacent ends 'of such movable jaw and lever bent up to provide curved faces on which vthey respectively slide, with the end of the movable jaw arranged to move into the curved end of the movable lever When the jaws of the device are opened, andthe curved end of the movable lever arranged to engagewith the curved end of the movable jaw when the jaws of the device are closed, substantially as described.
2. In a garment holder, a combined base and rigid jaw, provided with projections ,on the sides thereof, in combination with 4a movable jaw and a movable lever, the adj acent ends of such movable. jaw and lever bent up to provide curved faces on which they respectively slide, with the fend of the movable jaw arranged to move .into the curved endof the movable lever when the jawsof the device are opened, and the curved end ofthe movable lever arranged to engage with the curved end of ythe movable jaw when the jaws of the device are closed, the projections on the combined base and rigid jaw bent over into the curved portions of the movable jaw and lever, respectively, to maintainthe parts in operative relation; substantially as described.
3. In a garment holder, a combined base and rigid jaw in combination with a movable jaw and a movable lever, theend ofthe lever adjacent to the movable jaw bent up to .provide a curved face on which the leverslides, and such movable lever and movable jaw arranged to move theend of the movable jaw which is adjacent to the movable lever into the curved end of the movable leverwhen the jaws of the device are opened, and the curved end of the lever arranged to engage with the under face of theadjacent endof the movable jaw when the jaws of thedevice. are closed, substantially as described.
` Y HUGO C. KRAUSE.
