SAFETY carol APPLICATION FILED NOV. I8, I916.
V Patented Aug. 6, 1918.
UNITED STATES PATENT oFmoE.
GEORGE H. TILFORD, 0F PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ROBERT L. MOORHEAD, 0F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SAFETY-CATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 6, 191 8.
Application filed November 18 1916. Serial No. 132,042.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, GEORGE H. Trnrono, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Catches; and I do hereby declare the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same, to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The invention relates to an improved safety-catch adapted for use in bar-pins and the like and has for its object to produce a safety-catch which is simple in construction and eflicient in operation.
To these ends the invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and more particularly 7 set forth in the claims; In describing the invention in detail reference/will be had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a bar-pin provided with my novel form of safety-catch.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a side view in perspective of the safety catch on an enlarged scale and in closed position.
Fig. at is a similar view of the safetycatch in open position.
Fig. 5 is a rear perspective view.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the body of the bar-pin, 2 the pin-tongue, and 3 the hinge-member, all of which are of the usual well-known construction.
The catch-member I has a body-portion of the usual construction, but in addition is provided upon the back with a loop-member 5 formed by bending back a projecting portion on each side of the body-portion of the catch. Mounted upon and in sliding engagement with the catch-member 4 is an inverted U-shaped guard-member 6, one leg 7 of which passes through the loop-member 5 and the other leg 8 of which is arranged and adapted to close the opening in the catchmember when the guard-member is in its lower or closed position, as shown in Fig. 3. The free end 9 of the leg 7 is bent back at a right angle to prevent disengagement of the guard-member from the catch-memher. The guard-member is preferably provided with two lateral projections or fingerpieces 10, for use in operating the device.
The operation of the guard will be readily understood, and it will be seen that when 1t 1s in its raised position, as shown in Fig.
4, the pin-tongue will be free toenter the opening in the catch and that when the guard is moved downward to its lower position, the leg 8 will move across the opening in the catch, thereby closing the opening and locking the pin-tongue in engagement with the catch. It will also be seen that the guard can be quickly moved to its closed position by simply pressing the bar-pin against the clothing of the wearer.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An article of the character described, comprising a body-portion, a catch-member and a guard-member mounted to slide longithe back with a loop-member, and a U- shaped guard-member having one of its legs mounted to slide in said loop-member and the other le arranged to slide longitudinally upon the front of said catch-member, and means for operating said guard-member.
5. In a bar-pin, the combination with a flat body-portion of a hinge-member, a pintongue, a catch-member and a guard-mem ber mounted to slide longitudinally upon the exterior of said catch-member and provided with means for operating said guardmember.
