UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM DOD, OF NEWBURY, ENGLAND.
HAT-BOX.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM Don, a subject of the King of Great Britain and lrelandpresiding at Westbrook House, Newbury, in the county of Berkshire, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hat-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hat boxes to hold a hat and also in some cases to have a receptacle for gloves or other articles, and the main object of my invention is a light, cheap, and convenient receptacle for the hat, that opens with a spring lid and may be hung up on a hat peg.
Hats when hung up and left on a peg or elsewhere for any considerable time frequently become very dusty, and according to this invention they are preserved by the hat box which is itself hung up or packed away or deposited wherever desired and I thus provide a most convenient article for preserving and identifying hats. The hat box may be emblazoned with advertisements if desired. The box is mainly made of some cheap pulp, celluloid, stamped metal or other suitable material.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a hat box constructed in accordance with this invention and showing a hatinclosed therein. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a similar View to Fig. 2 save that the hat box is shown hung up on a hat peg, and it is open. Fig. 4 isa similar view to Fig. 3 but showing the hat box hung up from the other end. Fig. 5 is an external plan view of the lid. Fig. 6 is a developed side elevation of Fig. 4 parts being broken away for the sake of clearness. Fig. 7 is a detached view of the hinge hereafter described. Fig. 8, is a detached section of the left hand part of Fig. 1. Fig. 9 is a detached section of the right hand part of Fig 1.
The three last named figures are drawn to a larger scale than the others, for the sake of clearness.
2 is its lid.

may be made accessible for holding gloves or other luggage. This false crown may be made of wire, like a bird cage. Attached to the lid is a tab 8, and 9, is a button to hold said tab 8 when closed up, as clearly shown in dotted lines in Fig. 8. The lid 2 has a groove 10, into which a flange l]. on the box 1 goes so as to help to keep out dust rain and the like. The hinge 12 (see Figs. 6 and '7) is spring impelled in any suitable way the form shown having spiral springs.
13 is a carrying handle attached to lid 2.
I provide a catch or barb 14 (see Figs. 1, 6, and 8) on the box and, there is a bolt 15, one end of which meshes with said catch 14. This bolt 15 is preferably spring impelled by a cross spring 16, and I prefer to indent the lid 2 as shown at 17, so that in addition to allowing a fair sweep or surface for the lid the indentation Will serve as a strengthening channel or rib. Attached to the end of the bolt 15, that is that end remote from the nose or catching end, I attach another tab, 18, similar to the tab 8 and this tab 18 is affixed to the lid 2. I prefer to provide a button 19 to prevent flapping about of the tab 18 when the hat box is to be stowed away for packing pur poses.
It will be understood that this hat box may be hung up by either of the tabs 8 or 18. Should it be hung up by the tab 8 which is attached to the lid 2, it will only be necessary to give a downward pull either on the tab 18 which is connected to the bolt 15 or on the box 1 itself or some part thereof in order to open the hat box, and should it be hung up by means of tab 8, a pull on tab 18 will cause the hat box to open. The hat box can be readily closed with a snap.
Although I have illustrated this invention as applied to a hat box for bowler hats it must of course be ununderstood that it may be made for other shaped hats.
What I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
The combination with a hat box made of light material shaped approximating to the shape of a hat and having a spring lid hinged thereto, of two tabs and a spring belt or catch, one of which tabs is attached to the box and the other to the spring bolt or catch, such tabs serving to hang up the box, and, when pulled apart to release the lid of the box, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name this 28th day of July, 1906, in the presence of two subscribing Wit- HGSSBS.
