SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,481, dated December 18, 1883. Application filed October 11, 1883. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, BELLE M. SAHLEIN, of the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented an Improvement in Box-Cover Attachments; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to an attachment for the covers of boxes, such as are mainly employed to contain hosiery, fancy articles, and other small goods which are displayed in the boxes; and it consists in a box having strips of tape, one end of which is secured to the inside front of the cover, while the other ends are secured to the inside of the box opposite, so that when the cover is in place the tapes will extend across from one side to the other above the contents.

Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure 1 is a view of my device, showing the box open. Fig. 2 is a similar view. Fig. 3 is a transverse section, showing the box closed.

In the sale of many classes of goods which are kept in boxes-such as hosiery-it is often necessary for the salesman to take down and open from ten to twenty boxes to show the different styles and sizes, and when the covers are loose it creates great confusion, and much time is wasted in finding the proper covers andnumbers for the boxes. If the box-covers are hinged to the boxes, they occupy too much room when opened, and are easily torn or broken.

In my invention,

A is a box of pasteboard or other similar or suitable material, and B is the cover fitted to slip over the top in the usual manner.

C O are tapes of flexible materia One end of each tape tape is secured to the rear inside of the box, near the top and end, and the opposite ends are secured to the front inside of the cover, at the opposite side, as shown. The ends of these tapes may be secured to the box and cover by ornamental fastenings D, as shown, and the tapes are of such a length as to extend across the top of the box inside and above the contents, and allow the cover to be fitted to its place.

When the contents of the box are to be exhibited, the cover is simply slipped off to the back and around under the bottom where it remains, and cannot be lost or separated from the box. When the box is closed, the tapes pass over the top of the contents, and do not interfere in any way.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I In combination with a box having a removable cover, two or more tapes having their ends secured to the inner front of the cover and the rear inner edge of the box near the top, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
