WASHING-MACHINE.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 8,673, dated January 20, 1852.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN MCLAUGHLIN, of Goshen, in the county of Clermont and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Va-shing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part. of this specification, the said drawing being a longitudinal section through the machine.

It is my aim in this improvement so to form and arrange the moving parts as to nearly balancethe two movements, namely the downward one which results in fulling or beating the clothes and the upward or retracting stroke made preparatory to another plunge. This is effected by weighting the handle which is suspended by shackles from the frame so as to coperate with and assist the movements of the person operating the machine when the clothes are being acted on. The handle also operating from a center from which it is suspended is much more conveniently handled and prevents any necessity for lifting it vertically preparatory toits downward effective stroke.` The other point in my invention is a method of squeezing the water from the clothes as they are removed from the tub, by passing them between rollers the lower one being rotated 4 by means of a crank handle and the upper one being set in a swinging gate which is brought down when .desired and the required force applied by means of the hand.

In the annexed drawing (a) represents a box or receptacle which contains the clothes and hot water, the floor or bottom of this box sloping downward away -from the handle so as to collect the clothes and hot water at the farther end. This box is closed by a lid (a) when charged with clothes and water. (b) is a ram or beater being of a somewhat flattened form and fluted on its face, to this beater are attached a pair of rods (c) which passing through the front (d) of the box are united to the weighted handle (d) outside of the box; there are two beads (e) in the angles of the box upon which the ram slides; the rear end of the ram frame is supported by shackles (f) which vibrate so as to allow of the play of the frame. The ram may run on rollers so as to facilitate its passage, and may have a roller along its upper edge to assist in delivering the clothes.

When the clothes are washed the roller (g) is brought down upon the roller (h) and the requisite pressure being put upon the end of the swinging frame the clothes are drawn through between the rollers into a tub outside, the water being mostly arrested by the rollers and returned to the tub I-Iaving thus fully described the nature, construction and operation of my improved washing machine, what I claim therein as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The method of hanging and operating the plunger by means of the shackles (f, f,).

and the heavy co-unterpoisehandle (d), as described.
