Description

'.IoIIN cqoRAWFoRo, or ST. CHARLES, ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 78,067, dated May 19, 1868.
IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
ein .stimule aftrek trim time @aan hattet mit mating part ni its snm.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN C. CRAWFORD, of St. Charles, in the' county of Kane, and Stato of Illinois, have invented a new and improved Washing-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilledin the art to make and. use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The drawing represents a longitudinal sectional side elevation of my improved washing-machine.
This invention relates to an improvement in the construction of a washing-machine and clothes-presser, and consists in forming a long box or trough with a corrugated bottom, and providcdwith two large' heavy rollers, connected witha lever, by which the rollers are moved over the corrugated bottom of the box, to wash the clothes, by rubbing with their combined rolling and reciprocating motion..
A represents a long box, mounted on legs, in the bottom of which box is a. wooden bed-piece, B, corrugated transversely.
Within the box A is fitted loosely a frame, a a, in which are hung, crosswise, two large and heavy wooden rollers, C C. The frame a a is connected by a spring-bar, b, with an upright hand-lever, D, which has its fulv crum at the lower end, whereit is connected with thc-bottom of the box A. The connecting-bar is made to bear down on the rollers.
It will be seen that by moving the hand-lever D back and forth, therollers C C will traverse over the corrugated bed-pieceB, and effectually cleanse, by friction, the clothes placed-in the bottom of the box, on the corrugated bed-piece. I i( At one end of the box A, a cross-partition, c, forms a compartment, in which the clothes, after being washed, may be pressed or squeezed nearly dry, by means of a lever, E, operating on a block, F, that lits in the' box upon the clothes. The bottom, G, of the compartment for pressing the .clothes,'is elevated above the level of the water in the washingmachine by a perforated block, al, so that the water may run off freely, and the clothes be made partially dry when pressed. The pressing-arrangernent may be omitted, when desired.-
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combined washingmachine and clothes-presser,` constructed as described,` and consisting of the box A, having corrugated bottom B and partition c, the frame a, provided with plain rollers C, eonnecting-ro^l I1, nml lever D, perforatedbottom G, follower F, andlever E, all arrangedand operatingas and for the purpose set forth. i
The above specification ofimy invention signed by me, this 211th dayonf December, 1867.
i JOHN C. CRAWFORD.
