Description
No. 862,849. PATENTED AUG. 6, 1907 F. L. RUMBLE.
RGLLER SKATE. APPLICATION FILED APILSO. 1901.
UNITED STATES FRANK L. RUMBLE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
ROLLER-SKATE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 6, 1907.
Application filed April 30,1907. Serial No. 871.040-
'readily applied as an attachment to existing forms of roller skates without changing or altering them.
To these and other ends hereinafter set forth the invention stated in general terms comprises the improvements to be presently described and finally claimed.
The nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, and in which Figure 1, is a side elevational view of a roller skate fitted with brake mechanism embodying features of the invention. Fig. 2, is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3, is a top or plan view of a clip detached from the skate.
In the drawings 1, is the foot plate of a skate to which are attached the rollers 3. The skate may be of any ordinary variety and the one chosen for illustration is fitted with an ankle strap 2.
4, is a bar bolted to the underside of the foot plate in advance of the rear wheels and the ends of this bar project laterally and constitute pivots.
5, are brake levers pivoted intermediate of their lengths to the laterally projecting ends of the bar 4. The lower portions 6, of these levers are rearwardly curved and fitted with a brake shoe 7. The upper portions 8 of these levers are outwardly bowed so as to accommodate the ankle strap 2, when present, and the ankle joint of the skater.
9, is a leg strap fitted with clips 10, having a row of holes 11 into any one of which the upper end of a brake lever 5, may be inserted so that the position of the brake lever can be adjusted.
In use the skate is put on in the ordinary way and the brake levers are adjusted in the clips 10, so that ordi- To utilize one brake lever instead of two is an obvious modification of the invention which does not appear to require illustration or special description.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A roller skate provided with brake levers pivoted thereto and extending above and below the foot-plate thereof and carrying at their lower ends a brake shoe for the hind wheels and having at their upper ends attaching means for engaging the wearers leg, substantially as described. 1
2. A roller skate comprising a foot plate to which wheels are attached, a bar arranged in front of the hind wheels and secured to the underface of said plate and projecting laterally therefrom, brake levers arranged at the sides of the foot-plate and pivoted to the ends of the bar and rearwardly curved at their lower ends and outwardly bowed at their upper portions, a brake shoe applied to the rearwardly curved ends of the brake levers in operative position in respect to the hind wheels, and attaching means applied to the upper ends of the brake levers, substantially as described.
3. In combination a roller skate provided with brake levers pivoted intermediate of their lengths thereto and carrying at their lower ends a brake shoe for the hind wheels, and leg fastening means providedwith clips for adjustably engaging the upper ends of the brake levers, substantially as described.
4. A roller skate provided with pivots which project laterally from its foot plate in front of its hind wheels, brake levers pivoted intermediate of their lengths to said pivots and provided at their lower ends with a rearwardly projecting brake shoe, and a leg strap engaging the upper ends of said levers, substantially as described.
5. A roller skate provided with curved and bowed levers pivoted intermediate of their lengths to the sides thereof, and having their lower ends equipped with a brake shoe, and with leg attaching means connected to the upper ends of the levers, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
FRANK L. RUMBLE.
In the presence of- W. J. JACKSON, K. M. GILLIGAN.
