Specification of Letters Patent.

I '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT EDWARD BLACKLOCK, subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Station Road, Hirst, in the county of N orthumberland, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in N on-Slipping Sole-Plates and Means for Fastening Them to the Foot of the VVearer, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates toa sole-plate which is provided with spikes, nails or other protuberances whereby resistance to sliding along the surface of the ground may be derived, and which plate is ada ted to be readily secured to an ordinary sioe or boot, which is being worn by the intended user, and be readily detached therefrom when desired.
By reference to the accompanying drawing it will be seen that the contrivance comprises the following essential components, namely :A sole-plate furnished with the non-sliding spikes, nails or other protuberances, ledges upstanding from the sole-plate so arranged as to be adapted to be drawn into close contact with the edge of the sole of the shoe 01' boot of the wearer, hooks, loops or other means of attachment formed on or secured to the upstanding ledges, and straps adapted to effect an attachment with the hooks, loops or other means, and also with the shoe or boot when on the foot of the user. In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the non-slipping sole plate fastened in apreferred manner to the foot ofthe wearer. Fig. 2 is an inclined view of a plate with the stra s detached therefrom, showing alternative etails. Fig. 3 is a section along the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a rubber stud adapted for use on the form of plate shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Fig. 5 shows an alternative detail. Fig. 6 is a side elevation showing an alternative arrangement of the securing strap, and Fig. 7 is a side elevation showing the sole plate of Fig. 5 fastened in the manner shown in Fig. 1.
In these figures a is the solelate, portions of which are removed, chiefly for the sake of lightness. To this sole-plate metal studs 1) are secured by riveting or otherwise, or rubber studs 5 are'attached in a renewable manner by forming them with a neck, (Fig. 4), the disk 6 being sufliciently deformable to be inserted through an orifice formed in the sole-plate for the reception of the stud. Up-
standing from the sole-plate are ledges, two indicated by c 0, being so situated, one on each side of the foot of the wearer near the toes, as to clip the edge of the sole of the shoe or boot of the wearer when, by means of the fastening to be presently described, the nonslipping contrivance is drawn firmly in a direction toward the heel of the wearer, the wedge shape of the front portion of the sole of an ordinary shoe or boot being adapted to cause the ledges to effect the close clipping of the edges of the sole. Two other upstanding lugs cl (1 are formed in one with, or are secured to-,'the sole-plate and are so situated as to occupy a position beneath the instep of the wearer.
By means of the upstanding ledges or lugs c c and d d and by straps e e the non-slipping plate is secured to the foot of the wearer in either of the ways shown in Figs. 1 and 6 or by a modification thereof. According to Figs. 1 and 7 the strap 6 is hitched by a ring or loop to a hook formed in one with the near ledge c, the strap is led over the boot and passed through a loop (1 secured to the lug (Z on the far side of the foot, "from which it is led around the heel of the boot of the'wearer to be buckled to the end of a second strap 6 which is similarly attached to a hook formed with the alternative ledge c and through a loop secured to the alternative lug (Z. For further security of attachment the straps are led from the heel around the ankle of the wearer as shown. Instead of passing through loops d d they may, at a portion of their length, be made cylindrical and passed underneath hooks formed in one with the lugs d d as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. In tightening the straps and also by the bending of the foot, during exercise, a movement of the straps relative to the lugs cl (1 will occur. Accor ingly the loops secured thereto or the hooks formed thereon, should be adapted to minimize the friction due to the movement of the straps. For this purpose small rollers d may be mounted on theloops or small pulleys d d may be carried on the lugs d d as shown.
Instead of hooking the straps to the ledges c 0 they may be permanently secured p hereto by rivets, for example, as shown in To render the sole-plate more pliable it may be made in two parts a M, as shown in Figs. 5 and 7, the two parts being united by riveting each to a piece of leather a.
I claim:
1. A sole-plate to be worn beneath the sole of an ordinary boot to prevent slipping, comprising a plate, non-slipping downward projections on said plate, an upstanding ledge on each side of the fore portion thereof, adapted, on drawing the plate toward the heel, to closely fit the toe portion of the sole of the boot, an upstanding means of attach ment of a strap thereto on each side at the rear portion of the plate where the soleof the boot commences to narrow, and a strap adapted to be fastened to the fore ledge on one side to engage with the rear means of attachment on the other side and after being passed around the heel of the boot to engage with the rear means of attachment on the first side and be fastened to the fore ledge on the second side.
2. A sole-plate to be worn beneath the sole of an ordinary boot to prevent slipping, com prising a plate, non-slipping:downward pro 1 'ections on said late an upstandin led e on each side of the fore portion thereof ada ted, on drawing the plate toward the hee to closely fit the toe portion of the sole of the boot, hooks formed on'said ledges, an upstanding loop attachment of a strap thereto on each side, at the rear portion of the plate where the sole of the boot commences to narrow and a strap adapted to be engaged with the hook formed on the fore ledge on 4 one side, to pass through the rear loop on the other side and, after being passed around the heel of the boot to pass through the rear loop on the first side and be engaged with the hook formed on the fore ledge on the second side.
3. A sole-plate to be worn beneath the sole of an ordinary boot to prevent slipping, comprising a plate, which plate is composed of 1 two flexibly united stiff portions, non-slipping downward projections on said plate, an upstanding ledge on each side of the fore ortion thereof adapted, on drawing the plate toward the heel, to closely fit the toe portion of the sole of the boot, an upstanding means of attachment of a strap thereto, on each side at the rear portion of the plate where the sole of the boot commences to narrow, and a strap adapted to be fastened to the fore ledge on one side to engage with the rear means of attachment on the other side and after being passed around the heel of the boot to engage with the rear means of attachment on the first side and be fastened to the fore ledge on the second side.
4. A sole-plate to be'worn beneath the sole of an ordinary boot to prevent slipping, comprising a plate, which plate is composedof two flexibly united stiff portions, non-slipping'downward projections on said plate, an
upstanding ledgeon each side of the fore 0rtion thereof, adapted on drawing the p ate toward the heel to closely fit the toe portion of the sole of the boot, hooks formed on said ledges, an upstanding loop attachment of a stra thereto on'each side at the rear portion of t. e plate where the sole of the boot commences to narrow, and a strap adapted to be engaged with the hook formed on the fore ledge on one side and after being passed around the heel of the boot to pass through the rear loop on the first side and be engaged with the hook formed on the fore ledge on the second side.
