ANDREW MADSON, O F: PAT ELRSON, EVV4 JERSEY.
Lette/rs Patent No. 85,835, dated January 12, 1 869. A
IMPROVE!) CHAIR AND STEP-LADDER *MOH- The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making of the same.
To all whom it mag/'convenu Be it known that I, ANDREW MADSON, of Paterson, in the county of Passaic, and State of New J ersey, have invented a new and improved Chair and Step-Ladder; and I dobereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
and exact description thereof, -which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved' method -of constructing chairs, whereby the same are couvert` ible at pleasure into either a chair or a step-ladder.
- It consists of a short step-laddcr, hinged tothe seat of a chair, which is made narrow for that purpose, in
`such a way that the top dfthe ladder becomes a part ofthe seat, and, by folding` the step-ladder up against the back ofthe chair, a neat, light, and convenient stepladder is formed.
In the accompanying plate of drawingsl Figure 1 is a central vertical sectional view of my invention, taken in the line x x,|fig. 2, the position of the ladder when folded yback being shown in red.
v Figure 2 is a front View of the same, when the ladder is folded down so as to be used for a chair.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the chair. B is the step-ladder. C -is the chair-seat. a are hinges, bymeans of which the ladder B is hinged .to the seat G.
The chair A is constructed of the same materials as is in height that said ladder may be folded upwards and Ibackwards against the back of the chair A.
'Upon and between the front, legs ofthe chair A is any convenient number of steps, similar to those of the step-ladder B, so as, when the ladder is folded against the hack of the chair A, to forma step-ladder equal in height to the height ofthe back of the chair'.
The operation is readily seen from the drawing and the above description.
Constructed as above described, it constitutes 'a neat and convenient chair and step-ladder combined, which is Aconvertible at pleasure into either a chair or a stepladder. e
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters The arrangement of the hinged step-ladder B with the seat 0, and the back, as herein described, for the purpose specified.
