Be it known that I, CnAnLEs CLYDE ROTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Barberton, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Holding'Glass and Similar Articles in Place, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has relation to devices for uniting two adjacent articles and is peculiarly applicable for holding glass in position in show-case frames, and the object thereof is to provide simple and effective means whereby the translucent material of a show-case may be fixedly secured in place, said means being such thatthe joint between adjacent parts will be tight as well as completely covered.

and frame of a show-case are arranged to lap each other in making a oint between them, considerable difiiculty is experienced in making the lapping portions fit perfectly, and hence, in carrying my invention into efiect, I employ an elficient yet simple means which obviates the necessity of lapping the parts and also practically insures a perfect union between them.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts constituting the invention, to behereinafter referred to and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification in which is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is .to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

In the drawings, in which similar reference numerals indicate like parts in the different figures: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the top portion of a show-case with a portion thereof broken away to better illustrate the invention and, Fig. 2 is a perspective view' of a device used in uniting the glass in position in the frame of a case.

In the drawings, there is shown the upper frame of the show-case in which is mounted a sheet of beveled glass, as being one of the best means for illustrating the adaptability of my device, although, as it will subsequently appear, other objects may be united Experience has shown that where the glass,

together with equal efficiency by means of this invention, and it will also be shown that the glass in the show-case may be perfectly united with the frame even if the same is not provided around its edges with a beveled surface.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates the frame of a show-case provided on its outer surface with any ornamental'formation which is desired by the maker or user.

In carrying out this invention, I prefer to form on the inner or rear face of the frame 1 a thin but relatively deep rabbet 2. In this rabbet place the device which constitutes the main portion of this invention, by the use of which the peculiarly desirable charac teristics of the invention are obtained. This device consists of an .approximately T- shaped strip 3, preferably of metal. This strip 3 may be constructed in various shapes, sizes and conformations without departing in any manner from the scope of this invention. In the drawings, this strip 3 consists of a head portion 4 the upper portion of which is preferably convex in cross-section, and from which depends a web 5. This web may be made with parallel side faces or may be tapering as shown in Fig. 2; but in either event it is provided with openings 6 through which may be passed screws or pins for attaching it in position. The under faces of the head portion 4of this strip are preferably made concave, although they may, if desired, be

made flat and at approximately right angles to the web ortion One of t e side ortions of the head 4 is preferably arrange to project laterally from the Web portion 5 a slightly greater distance than the other. In placing this stri 3 in position, thelaterally narrower portion of the head 4 is so placed as to engage the top face of. the frame 1- and is held against the same firmly during its placing in position, so that the joint between them will be as perfect as possible. The strip 3 is then secured fixedly inposition by means of nails or screws passed through the openings 6 into the frame 1. A sheet of glass 7 is then placed in position byvraising the same from below until it encounters the overhanging edge of the head 4 so firmly as to insure an approximately perfect union therewith. This strip 3 will e formed of such material and of such a size as to be capable of bending slightly in order that the head portion thereof may adapt itself to any slightine ualities which may exist on the portions 0 the frame or glass which its edges contact with, without in any manner displacing the strip or appreciably distorting the same. When the glass has been placed in position as just stated, a stop 8 of suitable material is pressed upwardly against the under side of the glass w1th sufficient firmness to maintain the engagement of the glass with the strip, and the stop is then secured in position by nails or screws which enter that portion of the inner face ofv the frame 1 below the rabbet 2-. Of course in assembling a show-case such as is illustrated in thedrawings, all the strips'3 will be fastened before the glass is placed in osition, so that the strips 3 may be'place in position approximately simultaneously.

From the foregoing it will be seen that this device will work with equal efficiency where the bevel, shown in the drawings, is omitted from the glass, and this device will be equally efficient in joining together other articles. It will be further stated, that if desired, the r'abbet 2 may be omitted and the strip 3 secured to the inner face of the frame 1; however, this is not the desired or preferred construction, but is simply mentioned to illustrate the adaptability of this device for. the pur ose hereinbefore described.

ii hat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination with a suitable support and means for securing a body thereto, said means comprising a T-shaped member secured to said sup ort and having one side of thetop thereof a utting against the upper face of thesupport and the other side of the top thereof overlapping and engaging one face of said 'body, a retaining strip, and

v means engaging the said support for holding said stri snugly against the other face of said bo y whereby the other face of said body is brought into close contact with the head of said member.

2. A plate glass retaining device comprising a T-shaped member having the vertical portion thereof provided with openings through which is adapted to extend hold-fast devices for securing the member to a suitable support, the horizontal portion of said member adapted to overlap the glass plate and the support, and a retaining strip abutting against the support and vertical portion of z ontal portion of said member and adapted to engage the glass plate for holdin 'it snugly against the horithe member, said retaining strip provided with openings through which is adapted to extend hold-fast devices for retaining said strip in position.

3. Means for securing'a sheet of glass in position comprising a T-shaped member adapted .to be detachably secured to the inner side of a suitable support and having one side of its top engaging the upper surface of the sheet of glass and its other side the top of the support, and a vertically-extending flat strip adapted to be secured to one side of the support to which the T-sh'aped member is secured, abut against one side of the vertically-extendin portion of said member and have its top e ge bear against the lower surface of the glass sheet, 'therebyin connection with the T-shaped member connectingthe glass sheet to the support.

4. Means for securing a sheet of glass in position comprisinga T-shaped member adapted to have the vertical portion thereof abut against the inn'er side of the support to which the glass is to be secured and further having one side of its top engaging the upper surface of the sheet of glass andrthe other side thereof the top ofthe support, and a vertically-extending flat strip adapted to be secured to the inner side of said support and abutagainst one side of the vertically-extending portion of said member and have its top ed e bear against the lower surface of the glass s eet, thereby in connection with said member secure the sheet to the support.

5. Means for securing'a sheet of glass in position comprising amember adapted to abut against the inner side of the support to which the lass is to be connected and having one side 0% its top overlappin the sheet of glass',' and a vertically-extending flat strip adapted to be secured to the inner side of the support against which the member abuts, abut against said member, thereby retaining it in position and have its top edge engage the lower face of the glass sheetthereby in connection with the overlapping portion of said member secure the lass in position.
