BENJAMIN .IAOOBSON, OF NElV YORK, N. Y.
REMOVABLE BACK FOR PICTURE-FRAMES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 681,703, dated September 3, 1901.
Application filed July 3, 1901. Serial No- 67,036. (No model.)
T 0 all zuhom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN J ACOBSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvemen ts in Removable Backs for Picture- Frames, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to picture-frames, and has especial reference to the removable backs of that class of small picture-frames which are adapted to rest on a table and have a foldable back-rest or other support.
The object of this invention is to provide a back for portable picture-frames which can be readily put and secured in place and be easily detached and to provide a frame with a dust-proof back.
The invention consists of a combined picture-frame and removable back constructed as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective rear view of a picture-frame and back embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof with support broken away, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section.
1 indicates the picture-frame, which is of the kind generally used for holding cabinetphotographs.
2 is the removable back, and 3 the usual form of folding back-support.
The several parts may be made of metal, wood, or other suitable material. In the present instance they are preferably of metal.
In order that the back 2 may be readily attached or detached, it is formed with elastic flanges adapted to be sprung into engagement with and be held by retaining devices on the frame 1. Any number of flanges may be employed; but for the purposes of this invention each side is provided with an elastic flange 4:. These are formed by taking a metal blank and slitting the corners, as at 5, and then bending over the edges of the sides so as to form angular flanges 4.
The back of the frame 1 adjacent to its edges is provided with suitable retaining devices to engage the flanges 4. These retaining devices may be of any suitable kind and shape. As here shown, they are in the form of knobs or buttons 6, located at suitable distances apart. On putting the back 2 in place the elastic flanges 4 upon being pressed against the knobs 6 will yield and the back 2 may be snapped into place, the elastic flanges 4 engaging the knobs 6. As shown, the frame 1 is formed with a beveled border 7, on which are located at intervals the engaging buttons or knobs 6. By means of this construction the edge of the flanges 4: are onabled to have a free movement in their elastic springing engagement with the knobs 6, the edges firmly springing under the knobs 6, as shown in Fig. 3.
I do not confine myself to the exact details of construction as set forth, as theshape and arrangement of the flanges and retaining devices may be varied without departing from the essential features of myinvention. This invention may also be applied to other articles wherein use is made of coverings or caps.
In addition to the facility of readily detaching and securing the back in place the cost of manufacture is reduced, as the backs and frame can be made in quantities at small cost, and especially in the case of gilded frames it does away with considerable labor and expense and provides the frame with a dust-proof back at the same time.
Having described the invention, I claim 1. A picture-frame, having engaging devices in combination with a removable back, having elastic flanges, adapted to engage said devices on the frame, whereby the back may be snapped into engagement with the frame, as herein set forth.
2. A picture-frame having engaging devices in combination with a removable back having angularly-bent flanged elastic edges adapted to engage said devices on the frame, whereby the back may be snapped into engagement with the frame, as herein set forth.
3. A picture-frame having a beveled border with engaging devices located between the edges of said border in combination with a removable back having angularly-bent flaring elastic flanged edges adapted to engage said devices on the frame, whereby the back may be snapped into engagement with the frame, as herein set forth. 1
i. A picture-frame having a beveled border with spaced balls or knobs located on said border between its edges in combination with with devices on the body or frame of the article to which the engaging devices are affixed, whereby the back or covering may be snapped into engagement substantially as herein set forth.
Signed in the city, county, and State of New York this 29th day of June, A. D. 1901.
BENJAMIN JACOBSON.
