Specification of Letters Patent.
Iatented May 28, 1907. 1906. Serial a... 338,826-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, QUENTIN MCADAM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Utica, New York, have invented certain Im rovements in Knitted Undergarments, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a knitted undergarment which, as to its skirt portion, will be fully as elastic as an Oldlnary knitted underskirt, but as to its body portion will be somewhat less elastic, wherey said body portion will be available for the support of a skirt or for the attachment of hose supporters special waist or jacket for such purposes will be unnecessary. This object I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference be-. ing had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front view of a knitted undergarment constructed in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same.
The garment sleeved undershirt, although the invention is applicable to sleeveless undershirts as well, or to union undergarments either with or without sleeves.
The shirt shown in the drawing is open in front from neck to tail and is provided with a button-hole stri 1, although, if desired, the
- skirt ortion oft eshirt'may be composed of seam ess tubular web, the front openlng,
with its button-hole strip, extending only from neck to waist.
osed of knitted web The garment is com and preferably of ribbe knitted web, for the purpose ofinsuring the desired elasticity, and in the skirt portion of the full natural elasticity of the web 1s preserved, but the body portion, from the waist to the shoulders, is provided with certain bands or tapes of wovenfabric or other relatively inelastic material which are intended for connection to hose supporters orv to skirts or other nether garments. In consequence of the relative stiffness thereby imparted to the naturally elastic web of whichthe main body ortion of the garment is composed, the latter 1s rendered available for the proper performvided with a central rear 3 and rear tapes 4 connecte ders and side tapes 5 and rear tapes by means of diagonal tapes 6,
or the like, and the use of a with a knitted undershirt and the shown in the drawing a" arm'ent the ance of such supporting duty. 'Thenumber and disposal o the supporting tapes or bands may be varied without i parting from the essential feature of my invention, but in the drawing I have shown the skirt as proconnected to the front the tapes being provided with buttons 7 at the waist and with such additional buttons, or other fastening devices, as may be necessary to accommodate the various'garments or garment supporters which are to be attached thereto.- i
I am aware that prior to my invention waists, or jackets of cloth, muslin, or like Woven and relatively inelastic material, have been provided with tapes, bands or straps of the character which I have shown, but such waists or jackets must be worn in connection combination of the two garments is, in many cases, so bulky as to be uncomfortable to the wearer, especially if the undergarment is composed of heavy yarn or is provided with a fieeced lining, such, for instance, as that represented at 9, in Fig. '1. My invention provides a singlegarment combining the functions of the two garments heretofore necessary, an therefore overcomes ta e 2, front tapes over the should the above noted objec J tions to the use of the two garments, the I skirt portion of my im roved garment retain ing the full natural cl knitted web of which the garment is composed, but the upper or body iportion of the garment-being relatively sti ened by the tapes or hands secured thereto, so that it affords proper support for the garments suspended from it.
I claim An undergarment composed of knitted web having its upper portion relatively stiff a plurality of tapes or front and-rear tapes or bands extending om the shoulders to the waist portion of the garment, a central rear tape orband extending from the neck to the said Waist portion, and side tapes or bands extending to said waist portion, and each sued by means of bands, comprlsm asticity of the ribbedconnected to the front and real tagms or name to this specification, in'the presence of.
tapes two subscribing Witnesses.
bands on its reslpective side by djagona ower or skirt portion of the or bands, the
garment being free from such tapes or bands QU MGADAM' 5 and retaining the full natural elasticityof the Witnesses:
'tted web of the garment. WALTER D. JONES,
In testimony whereof, I have signed my ROBERT F. YOUNG.
